Two Weeks

in SublimeSunday4 days ago

There is so little time left until the calendar winter is over. So little time, and I could have said I lived my first winter without snow!

Well, that didn't happen. Maybe it's postponed for next winter...

When I least expected it, the first snow came. The problem is that the plants in my yard also had a less pleasant surprise. A few were already in bloom, but I'll tell you about that later.

Although I wouldn't want it to snow now, at the end of winter, I can't say I'm not glad to see snow. It's not much snow, but it's snowing nonstop, and who knows—maybe tomorrow there will be enough snow to last a few days, primarily for children and the child-hearted.

Winter in the city

The snowfall and other things took me downtown, in the old city center, and I could see how the first snowfall was in the most tourist place in Bucharest.

It's generally crowded here on Sundays. Not necessarily in the morning, as it was when I got there, but a lot more people should have been on the street anyway. The bad weather and unexpected snow scared a lot of people.

Lipscani is the main street in the Old Center. A few hundred years have passed over this place, which has always been a commercial area and has had good and bad times. It was abandoned for a long time, with uninhabited buildings for decades, but eventually, the whole area was repaired and redeveloped. This process continues to this day, but, for the most part, it has been completed.

IMG_20250216_110102.jpg

The side streets are sadder because of the furniture piled up, waiting for warmer days.

IMG_20250216_110139.jpg

Small traders, souvenir shops, and art galleries wait in vain for customers. It's a bad time for business.

IMG_20250216_110250.jpg

Trade is not working now but the terraces have enough consumers.

IMG_20250216_110327.jpg

IMG_20250216_110339.jpg

The restaurants have adapted to the weather and have covered terraces and small, transparent, heated tents that attract the shivering tourists.

IMG_20250216_110404_1.jpg

Most of the people walking these streets are not locals. All I hear is conversations in foreign limbo—Spanish, Italian, German, English, and a few others I don't recognize.

The young ladies speak Spanish. I don't think they're enjoying the cold today, but I imagine the warmth and the evening bustle in the bars and clubs will make them forget their shortcomings.

Here is a kind of center of the Old Center, next to the beautiful and imposing building of the National Bank of Romania.

IMG_20250216_110609.jpg

My steps lead me to the most beautiful street, Stavropoleos, which borrows the name of a small monastery, 300 years old, which is located here.

IMG_20250216_110657_1.jpg

I also like the facade of a building that was an essential bank before the Second World War: Banca de Credit Roman. However, the narrow street and the height of the building prevented me from getting the correct framing, so it doesn't fit in the photo.

IMG_20250216_110738.jpg

On the left is the church of Stavropoleos Monastery, which my wife attends. This is one of the essential reasons we are here every Sunday.

IMG_20250216_110746.jpg

My favorite place, without many restaurants and terraces but with a lot of heavy city history.

On the left is Stavropoleos Monastery, next to which is the History Museum. At the top stands the CEC Palace, a former bank and one of the most beautiful buildings in Bucharest.

On the right side, you can only see the covered terrace of the famous Beer Chariot restaurant, which has been operating for over a hundred years. Then, there is the Dacia Palace, home of the country's most interesting museum, Art Safari.

IMG_20250216_110815.jpg

In the monastery's inner courtyard are exhibited fragments from other old monasteries that were demolished during the communist period in Romania.

IMG_20250216_111451.jpg

Some children play in the freshly fallen snow. As I said, winter and snow are long-awaited and appreciated by them.

IMG_20250216_111454.jpg

Who can be the most beloved character in winter after Santa Claus? The snowman, of course.

These kids are really talented!

IMG_20250216_111517_1.jpg

Last but not least was coffee, always on Sunday, at my favorite coffee shop. A habit, an addiction, a little pleasure of life...

For me, it was a Beautiful Sunday(@ace108) with a tendency to become Sublime Sunday(@c0ff33a) because of the snow I didn't think it would be.

I hope that with this nearly photo-reportage, I have succeeded to some extent in capturing a part of the city during winter. This place is particularly popular with tourists, which I also appreciate greatly for its historical significance. Here, I feel like a foreign tourist in my own country and city. Maybe someone else would like to experience it too?

I always start with photos when I want to write a blog. Photos remind me of places, events, and feelings that turn into words...

Since we all love photography, let’s explore the captivating details captured in these photos.!

A wise saying goes that a photograph is worth a thousand words, but I don't think so.

It depends on the viewer.

Oh, I have never seen such tents as a part of a café. I would feel like sitting in a shop window :D but if snow and cold - I would risk sitting in one of these 😁

Impressive and beautiful city centre with that architecture, and the coffee of course could not be left out 😉. You indeed had a sublime Sunday!

Thank you!
I don't like staying in those tents either, I've never been inside. They were used first in the pandemic and then in the cold season. Some people like it, I see they're full.
Sunday was different because of the winter that came when we weren't expecting it. Now I hope it won't be long-lasting.

I bet those Spanish-speaking girls didn't like the cold and the snow... 😃 If they were from South America, that is for sure that they were unpleasantly surprised... 😃

I'm not a big fan of cold weather, and I would say that you did well with the hot coffee in the warm cafe at the end of your walk... ☕️

I think they were from Spain and knew what they would find.
Winter has only just arrived in Romania. I hope it won't last more than a week.

The snowy streets and the old buildings make the pictures very special, as if they were many years old... I don't know... I don't know... there is something I love about them and I'm glad that the whole area of the old town has been restored. This is my favourite!!!

Yeah, mine, too. You chose well, thank you!

To you! I enjoy your photographs very much.

The calender says so, however a proverb of us says different;

March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb

Well said!
