Earlier this year, we had the pleasure of spending some time as a family down at the coast of South Africa. I adore the sea, it is by far my favourite place to be however as an animal lover, the highlight of this trip was for sure the beautiful cats that roamed around the chalets. While I was super eager to make friends with all the kitties, I soon realised that they were not as enthusiastic about the idea of us being pals... so I settled for lying stomach flat on the floor with my camera and doing a little photoshoot instead.
Even with my best efforts - kind words and an outstretched hand offering pets - the cats were not interested in coming near me and darted away at any sudden movement I made. These feline friends were not interested in being my friend... this made me sad.
One late afternoon, we were outside busy braaing (For those that do not know - this is a South African BBQ) I noticed a small black kitty peering out behind a tuft of grass, watching us. it was observing from a distance but I think it really wanted what it could smell coming from our fire - a thick juicy steak.
I jumped at the opportunity and army crawled very slowly along the grass with my camera to photograph this elegant creature. He watched me very carefully, ready to run in the opposite direction if I got too close or moved too quickly.
I may not have got to pet any kitties that day but I sure did get the sweetest pictures of this shy character, wide eyes constantly watching.
Thank you little black cat for allowing me to photograph you! And for this sweet connection I got.
