Kamberg Valley an ultimately peaceful, calm region, tranquility reigns superb when no thunderstorms crash through, part of the Umkhahlamba Drakensberg Park. Approximately 3 hour drive from Durban depending on road conditions.
Hike up to historical San rock-art on guided tour, trout fishing, organized mountain biking, hiking challenges, for me quiet walk along the Mooi river bird watching is more appealing now.
Strongly suggest guided hiking in the area, solo travel not a wise idea, short or longer hikes on offer at the Kamberg Camp Office, Roman Baths a hidden gem when walking a short distance to enjoy a picnic and swim in nature, explore only leaving footprints behind.

Excellent place with self catering cottages available for a day or two to hike out enjoying more remote space.
Worthwhile visiting for long weekend, two Parks Board places in close proximity there.
I really love the earthy colours in the mountains @joanstewart.
Grasses up there at end of winter always glow gold when no burning takes place, I also enjoy when burnt and green shoots appear with new growth.

Grasses found in Afromontane region one will only see growing up there, most of Drakensberg foothills covered in grass.
Landscaping with grasses is quite popular.

Although I prefer to be alone for photography or when I explore new places, I think in Africa I would ask a local guide to accompany me, because you never know if a Hippo wants a hug around the next corner 😉

Good hiking higher up, sleeping in caves or overhanging rock formations when doing the Drakensberg hikes, using a guide who knows the region and inclement weather patterns.

I've been on a very, very short hike on Sunday and am sure the Drakensberg would be much to much for me at the moment - need some training 😅 but the hike sounds great.
Busy and tired during the week and mostly also too tired when I come home from photo trips at the weekend, but we are all fine, thanks so much, Joan, and so are hopefully you and your family too 😊

Happy you made a short hike, we have not made beach of late hopefully soon. Drakensberg offer interesting hikes which we have managed to explore over the years, perhaps one day!
Emotionally drained, get up and go then stop for a breather online and off. Coastal region is still in a mess trying to get infrastructure working once again, covid talk again in media, no wonder we all feel exhausted!

Not long ago, I have watched a few YouTube videos from a South African photographer who was hiking and photographing in the Drakensberg area - really beautiful 😀
These were massive floods and I believe you that it will take some time till all is working again. But Covid? Apart from wearing masks at certain places our lifes are almost back to normal. I hope that's only stupid talking in the media.

They drum up numbers to support sudden rise, most South African's have not taken the vaccine, very suspicious about this whole covid story. Also angry with lack of employment along with many other things, it's a boiling pot!
Masks have to be worn by school children, shops, malls or any closed building, walking outdoors at least they abandoned the idea, most did not bother I must say, cannot afford food for the table how on earth are people to buy masks?
Every so often I go watch a little remembering the fun times hiking, no more I stick to the valleys.

Oh yes, I can completely understand you and of course, how could these poor people afford to buy masks.
Depending on the shop you are you have to wear a mask or not. In food stores you need a mask and if you buy shoes you don't need one. This is confusing the people a lot. It's really time that this farce has an end for all.

The soil looks like the red soil here on the Islanad, Joan @joanstewart.
I hope things have settled down and all is well these days. 💕
Soil is healthy up there some patches red other slightly darker, good for crops in the valleys.
Flood damage will take a year to repair if not longer, travel for many going to work has doubled in time if not trebled, thank goodness I no longer have that issue!
Wow, that landscape has so much going on, it almost looks lush and arid at the same time and I guess it flows through those states yearly as the rainy and dry seasons dance their yearly dances. Great photos though.
Typical Africa in Spring, golden grasses below, possibly higher up had seen some rain or late snow.
Awesome scenery. We haven't been there yet. This id definitely going onto our "places to visit list".

Nice places to stay and visit in this region, slightly off the beaten track with Highmoor and Kamberg within striking distance to make a week or a couple of weekends.

Some venues and vistas in the region, out of season normally best time of year Spring or Autumn. Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse worth a visit and morning tea, self catering accommodation or Parks Board chalets close to Nottingham Road to visit the popular brewery.

Brackenburn Trout Retreat for self-catering, you would have to phone to make inquiries 0332677190, if you enjoy some trout fishing a great spot close to both Highmoor and Kamberg, Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse down the road.

Great big rock pool with freezing cold water running through, used to tease the boys when young to jump in for 'five bucks' 😀
The mountains already look lovely even in photos. To see it in person surely is something else.
Always enjoy the remote places before they become overcrowded.
