Cityscape Photography Round 104 | Lisbon | ENG / ESP

The Commerce Square has been for centuries the nerve center of the Portuguese capital. It was the site of the royal palace before the earthquake of 1775 and was until recently the gateway to the city by sea, as the port was located in its southern part.

The image shows the two main elements of the square, the Arc de Triomphe that leads to Rua Augusta, the axis of the Baixa district, the oldest in Lisbon. In front of the Arch and facing the estuary of the Tagus River, is the majestic statue of King José I, the monarch who reigned when the above-mentioned earthquake completely destroyed the most important part of the city.
