Cyber security is one of the most important industries in the world right now. As the internet grows more dangerous as time passes, cyber security becomes more and more important. Especially now that we have state sponsored hacking and spying, our data is at more risk than ever. Due to this we now have different consulting firms and security firms that advise on internet security, or do the protecting for us, they are like guards for computerized data. Now that is all well and good. As hackers are getting more stealthy and strong, the encryptions are getting stronger too. Hash maps, cryptography, multiple factors of authentication, you name it. All of them are doing a good job of protecting our data now. But how future proof is this?
You all probably have heard of quantum computers. Especially in movies and science fiction novels. They aren’t real. At least for now. But they soon will be. Governments around the world have adopted a policy. Store now, decode later. What they mean is they will hack sensitive data from their adversaries. But obviously the encryption is very tough. So they cannot just crack it open and see what data is hiding inside. These encryptions will take hundreds of years for a computer of today to decode. But the estimated power of a supercomputer will let it decode these encryptions in a matter of seconds. Technology giants like Google, Microsoft, Nvidia and others are working tirelessly to achieve these processing powers. Google is there to some extent. But once the power is unleashed, existing encryptions and securities will be rendered useless.
Researchers and cryptographers are already working on new encryption systems that can withstand the wrath of the supercomputer. Apple has already implemented one such system in their famous iMessage. Others are working too. Cybersecurity as a whole needs a big facelift, and fast.
