Learning History is Learning Who We Actually Are

Hello everyone and good evening. I must say the ongoing contest has triggered me to some extent. As history is a subject very close to my heart. I have always had a vested interest in studying the histories of different countries and different civilizations. I also had the interest to study the big events in the course of our history. Events that shaped the world of today. Such as many policies, many treaties and the wars and the takeovers of the medieval Times, everything. From the holy wars to the proxy wars, I have been very extensive in researching these stories because I have so much interest in them, I just couldn't take myself off it. And in my excavation of actual facts regarding these histories, I can tell you one thing for certain, history is probably the most fabricated thing you will find around you.

There was a famous saying that says history is written by the victors. And that is the exact problem. For example, in a war there are usually two accounts. One account from each side of the war. They both exaggerate their own exploits and they try to minimize their own losses. While they also exaggerate that the enemy Army was huge and that their own Army had shown great courage and defeated them. The general narrative is something close to these. On another example, out of all the modern countries, there are many countries that are ruled by fascist regimes or these or autocracies. And these regimes do not keep the country's history intact. They try to twist the facts to their own benefit and they try to portray themselves as the good guys, which most of the time isn't the case.

In my own country, there was a fascist regime and they tried to twist the facts and they try to hide their own wrongdoings from the textbooks. So there were a couple generations growing up knowing the false history and not knowing exactly who what's to blame. Who was the bad guy and who was the good guy. And these stories are coming out just in the last few months since that regime has been toppled. This goes to show that each and every one of us must study history to understand the actual roots of our Nation or people or the ethnicity of the place we live in. Because there's no point in living a lie and it might as well hurt your point of view to judge things in a neutral way.
