A friend rang me today to find out how I'm doing. Our friendship has lasted over 20 years, during which we've been through a lot. We've also done a few projects together.
We met at a club, shook hands, and knew immediately that we would become friends. Over time, we realised that we had similar values.
The first thing I look for in friendships is honesty. This is a strength of character that is very rare. Along with honesty comes loyalty. When you find both together, a good friendship is guaranteed. Fortunately, I am surrounded by good people that I can call friends. People who simply call to see how I'm doing and who help directly when they're needed or are there when there's something to celebrate.
The choice of friends is very important, because they can either help you a lot in life or severely hinder your own development.

ein Freund hat mich heute angerufen, um zu hören, wie es mir geht. Unsere Freundschaft währt schon über 20 Jahre, in denen wir viel durchgemacht haben. Wir haben auch einige Projekte zusammen gemacht.
Wir haben uns in einem Verein kennen gelernt, haben uns die Hand gegeben und wussten sofort, dass wir Freunde werden. Mit der Zeit hat man gemerkt, dass man ähnliche Wertvorstellungen hat.
Das erste, was ich in Freundschaften suche, ist Ehrlichkeit. Das ist eine Charakterstärke, die sehr selten ist. Zur Ehrlichkeit kommt die Loyalität. Wenn man beides zusammen findet, ist eine gute Freundschaft garantiert. Zum Glück bin ich von guten Menschen umgeben, die ich Freunde nennen kann. Menschen, die einfach anrufen, um zu sehen, wie es mir geht, und die direkt helfen, wenn sie gebraucht werden, oder da sind, wenn es etwas zu feiern gibt.
Die Wahl der Freunde ist sehr wichtig, denn sie können einen im Leben sehr voranbringen oder aber die eigene Entwicklung stark behindern.

The older I get, the more I realize the importance of spending time with people whose values align with yours. Who help you grow. Right now, I'm focusing on spending time with people with whom I feel a connection, with whom it's easy to be. I'm glad you have friends like that in your life. It's no small accomplishment ;)

My mother would argue that my friends are of the second kind, but even with all their flaws they are really good friends that I know for 25 years and I can rely on them.
