Omo… at the rate that people are making use of the internet today, it should very well be considered a fundamental human right ooo. One way to effectively punish someone, especially if you want to make them dependent on you, is to limit their access to the internet. If you control that, then you just might be able to keep them in check.
The internet is one of the most important assets of the 21st century, and it’s only going to get more important because, with every new innovation that comes, we find ourselves relying even more on the internet. It just might get to a point where cars would not even be able to operate without internet access.
The thing is when it comes to fundamental human rights; the right to life, the right to good food, the right to clothes, and the right to accommodation. Every human being on earth is supposed to get all these things, no matter how bad things are in the country. But then, all that was for an ideal world because in the world we live in today, we’re far from ideal. There are so many people who are homeless, they live on the streets and survive on scraps. Many people go hungry without even knowing where their next meal would come from. Should I talk about the ones that don’t have clothes and have to basically wear rags?
Now, for the internet, it would really be a terrible thing to be without the internet. I know just how frustrating it can be trying to access the internet but failing, knowing that there’s something important you have to do but not being able to go through because there’s just no network. In my house alone, I have a router which I subscribed with a lot of data, I use it for every device in my home that requires the internet. It’s always turned on because it’s always connected to power and when that goes, there’s a standby battery.
But then, I still subscribe on my phone as well. That way, there will always be a way for me to access the internet. If one is acting off, I’ll simply switch without any issues. I’m just saying all this to show you just how important it is to me. I earn a living, thanks to the internet. I entertain myself online. I watch my movies online, and since I got a smart TV, I stopped cable and I’ve never regretted that decision. Except when the network sucks.
For me, making it a human right would be a step in the right direction, but then there will be limits. I agree that kids are very impressionable, and being exposed to the internet at such a young age will do more damage than good. However, limits can be imposed. The way we have age restrictions on driving, drinking, and even some certain movies. We can have age restrictions on the internet. Before you can have free access to the internet, you must be of legal adult age. If not, it will solely be under the supervision of your parent or guardian.
But then, what are we doing? Such a ruling will never be passed. Not when these telecommunication companies are making so much money from the sale of data bundles and paying billions in taxes to the governments. It’s a cash cow, and the internet being what it is, it will never dry out. A gift that will keep on giving.
Well, it’s all good though. At least so far, no one has tried to come and take the internet from us. Maybe when it gets to that point, we’ll see what can be done.

A good reflection, have you ever thought about what it would be like if someone defined for us adults that you can only have 1 hour of internet per day, what would happen to communication, dialogue, work? Today it is something fundamental, but at the same time dangerous due to censorship and control.
If that is tried, the world would literally go down in flames. A world without the internet would be nothing but chaotic.
You nailed it to a clear point @bruno-kema . There are basic things humans should have full rights to like you mentioned. Clothing, Accommodation, lights, foods 🥘 including 💦. All these falls under “basic necessities”
Internet in this 21st century has become a basic necessity too. And soon enough cars 🚗 will be using internet just like the “Smart Television 📺” are now using internet for YouTubes and Movies 🎥. Its crazy 😜 indeed.
It's a futrue that can't be avoided, one way or the other, it's going to happen, whether we're ready for it or not.
Exactly. We need to embrace it fully.
The way you earn a living through internet, millions of people are earning a living through internet.
For me, internet should be no 4 in the fundamental human right.
As in ehn... many of us rely heavily on the internet, taking it away would just destabilize so many of us.
This is so true: for someone like me that can't even do without the internet, most time once my data finishes, I feel so empty, it's such a very frustrating situation to be in.
Omo... being without data... that's traumatic!😂😂😂
I thought about how the Internet is connected to many of the existing rights and it's fair to say that access to the Internet should be right.
We work, learn and express ourselves with the help of the Internet so what's wrong with making it a right when these things are already the fundamental human rights?
Abi... no one should have the right to stop someone else from accessing it. That should be the way these things are. But then, our leaders will only do things that keeps them more in power.
