Today is the 12th of February and in two days, we’d be observing Valentine’s Day. Now, we all know that the day is set aside to show love to all people and things. Although many have decided to set it aside for lovers and romance-related things. But that’s their business. I really have no care what couples or non-couples choose to do on Valentine’s Day.
However, I do have a care when it starts to affect my plans for the day. Because there are also a number of things I would like to do on that day, and from the look of things, doing it might very well be a mistake on my end. But then, what can I do? I might end up not having a choice in the matter at all.
For some reason, Marvel Studios decided to release Captain America: Brave New World to the cinemas on the 14th of February. Yeah, Valentine’s Day. I’m sure that their plan was to capitalize on the Lover's Day so that couples would use it as an excuse to go to the cinemas and burn money. Smart move on their part. However, thinking about it just makes me shiver. Because I know very well that on that day, just about everywhere will be filled up with people!
Festive days are usually the worst days for me to go out. I’m the kind of person who would actively try to avoid crowds simply because they make me uncomfortable. The noise, the knowledge that there’s someone close enough to elbow you in the gut… it all gets to me. That’s another reason I don’t really like stepping out because there are just too many people on the road.
It’s for this reason that I started the tradition of spending Christmas and New Year celebrations indoors. If I didn’t spend it at home, I spent it with friends or family, in their homes. Thankfully, such days are usually traffic-free as well. So getting from one place to the other would not be a hassle at all. However, it will be a totally different story with Valentine’s Day. It’s the first day of the weekend, so there will definitely be serious traffic, getting to the mall will be a hassle, and then getting a ticket could very well be a hassle as well.
I remember the day Spiderman: No Way Home hit the theatres in 2022, it was a massive hit back then and the cinema was packed! To the point that they had to use multiple halls just for the one movie. People had to stand in queues just to get tickets and even to enter the halls. But then, that could very well be the case in two days time. It’s been a while since I saw such an amount of people at the cinema, the last time being last December when Everybody Loves Jenifa hit the cinemas. And for a long time, tickets were being sold out!
So, knowing the blockbuster that Captain America: Brave New World is going to be, and knowing that the director is a Nigerian (Julius Onah), I’m sure that many people would troop to the cinemas to see the movie. There is definitely going to be a crowd there, and that fact is what is making it so scary for me. Now, I’m in a bit of a dilemma; should I go anyway and deal with the crowd of lovers? Or should I hold on till the weekend?
If I hold on till the weekend, I would have to accept the fact that by the morning of 15th February, I’d be bombarded with spoilers all over the internet. That’s one thing I’m trying to avoid, which is why I like seeing movies that very day that they’re released. I’ll be doing myself a great service by watching the movie on Valentine’s Day. However, that would also mean having to brave it out with the crowd.
As expected, all restaurants, hotels, clubs, and fast foods will be filled up to capacity. Even the mall where I plan to see the movie has all these facilities there and they would also be filled up. Omo… it’s not something I’m looking forward to at all.
So, therein lies my confusion. I just don’t know what to do. And I have to make a decision before the 14th comes around.
