Downplaying your efforts and putting it all down to "luck" is something that I would never do. Especially when you know how hard you worked for it. If you didn't choose to be extraordinary, they would not have noticed you. They saw your potential and promoted you. They didn't do it from the goodness of their heart, they did it because it was right for the business. Luck had nothing to do with it. It was all your doing!

I have experienced this a lot of times and it makes me laugh when you tell me that I was lucky instead of commending my efforts. It doesn't bother me really because I know what I have invested and whatever people think doesn't prevent me from appreciating myself.
