The tipping culture varies from place to place. It’s different for each country and even different for each organization. There are organizations that will encourage you to tip their workers, there are those who will forbid it and there are those who will mandate it. Hell, some will make you tip but it won’t go to the staff serving you, they’d rather use it to some other cause that they feel is good for it.
In the end, everyone deserves to run their organization in the way that they see fit. If they feel like tips are not good, they have every right to forbid their staff from demanding or receiving tips. However, it goes, business goes on. After all, their staff are getting paid.
So, what are my thoughts exactly on tipping? As far as I’m concerned, it’s meant to be by choice. The minute that choice is taken away, it becomes something else and it definitely doesn’t come from the heart. I’m giving you that extra money simply because I want to give it to you, not because I have to or I’m mandated to give it to you. Taking the choice away takes away the goodwill behind it.
Think of it like taxes. Nobody likes taxes, we all hate it, but whether we like it or not, we must pay it in full. Or else, we’ll find ourselves facing serious jail terms. Nobody enjoys paying taxes and if we all had to choose, many of us would prefer not to pay it. But the government doesn’t care about your feelings. So whether you enjoy paying the taxes or not, they’re getting it from you one way or the other. They don’t care if it’s coming from your heart or from your kidney.
With tips, it’s different and more personal. Something has to motivate it. Maybe it is an exceptional service, or you just like the way the person smiles at you or their voice. So many things can inspire a tip, whatever it is, it has to come by choice. Personally, I don’t think I’ll enjoy taking your money if I know that you really don’t want to give me. Imagine me giving you a gift and then telling you, “bro, I no won give you this thing at all. But just take am!”
Knowing that alone would have ruined whatever good feeling I would have had from taking your gift. So, that’s why I insist that tipping should be by choice. But then, it’s amazing how many people always try to force it on you, even people who don’t get tipping on a regular day. These days, almost everyone is after tipping. If you go to the mall, everyone will be asking for tips. From the security guards to the cleaners and the waiters in the restaurants, or staff of the other establishments present. If you keep giving everyone who comes to you, where will you see money to buy whatever you came there to buy?
Personally, I feel bad when a security guard or waiter asks me for a “small change” and I don’t have anything to give. Sometimes, even if it’s N500, I make sure I have it so I can give it to these guys. But that’s not always going to be the case because on some days, I won’t have cash, or I’ll be broke and I won’t be able to spare even the N500. It’s for days like these that I make this post. On days when you can’t tip, no one has any right to shame you for it or try to put you down simply because you couldn’t “drop something” for them.
Well, it is what it is. What else are we going to do? We just have to keep doing great. In a nutshell, tipping should only be by choice, anything else defeats the purpose.

Here in our country it is also done in the same way. The boys get a separate salary which is given by the owner of their shop and those who come there buy things and some money is given to them, then it becomes their right. It is because they do duty here for 12 hours from wake up and work very hard. If they get some extra money, then their life becomes better.
Yeah... as long as it's given by choice. Then it's all good.
I also think that tipping is a choice but nowadays I feel it's kind of taken forcefully in many cases and it already turned into a bad culture.
As in ehn... they make it a requirement which takes the fun and joy out of it.
Tipping should be by choice or free will. When compulsion is involved, or too much expectation of it before rendering an ideal service, I don't like it.
