You know, I’ve always wondered how my life today would have been if I had made some choices differently. Maybe if I made some big choices differently, or if I made tiny choices that seemed inconsequential differently as well. Would I have been in the position that I’m in today? Would things be better or worse than they are?
I guess this is something we can never really know just by thinking of it. Unless we get to live it, the only thing we can ever do about it is to assume. We make assumptions even while we know deep down that we have no idea how things could have turned out.
You see, our lives are a series of choices and decisions. These decisions we make lead to the experiences we have. The wins that we celebrate or the mistakes that we work hard to correct all stem from our decision-making. So, I guess it’s safe to say that who we are today is simply a product of our own decisions.
Have you wondered how different your life would have been if you went to a different primary school? Have you thought about how things would have been for you if you had grown up in a different environment from the one you had? What about having more or fewer siblings than you actually have in real life?
While you might have such thoughts, you know very well that there are some people in your life who brought some kind of goodness into your life. Maybe just by being their friend, they introduced you to a network that pushed you to become more successful than you were at the time. But then, imagine if you didn’t get to meet them for one reason or another, or imagine if you did meet them but disliked each other on the spot without even giving friendship a chance. It could be that you never got that push to be successful with them out of your life, or it could also mean that you met someone else who will push you to become even better.
The thing is, when we make decisions, we all hope that it’s the right one and we don’t get to regret it. This is because we know that nothing can take us back to the period before we made the decision. This is why when you watch movies on time travel, they’re always insistent that you mind how you change the past because a tiny deviation can cause a major change in the future.
So, the truth is, I don’t know how my life would have been if I made some decisions other than the one I’ve done already. Maybe if I had gone to a university instead of a polytechnic, things would have been a bit easier by now. Maybe if I stayed only one year for my IT instead of staying for 2 years, I would be a happy graduate by now. Maybe… maybe… maybe!!!
That’s all there is to it all. Just a bunch of maybes and a sprinkling of assumption. We don’t know for sure, and I guess it’ll be best to just let it be. Worrying myself about what could or couldn’t be is not a game I enjoy playing because it’s stressful. Thankfully, I’m happy with what I’ve got so far and while I’m working towards doing better for myself, I’m not going to bother myself by thinking of decisions I could have made differently.
I’m not a fan of “Had I known…”
We are human and obviously, we made many mistakes. Some decisions might help us to enjoy a better life but who knows if you are already enjoying it even if you think it is a mistake. It's really hard to say because nobody knows the future. I think we can focus on our present because it can change the future but thinking about the past for regretting is not good but we can consider it as a lesson.
As in ehn.... no one knows the future, we also don't know what could have been ifnwe made different choices. So we should simply be content with our reality and move on from there.
There are times when we may feel our lives will end up in a particular way if we had done something else. It’s just like saying that our lives will be better if we were born in a rich home. What if things change after we were born and our parents turn out poor?
So we have to appreciate whatever condition we are in
As in ehn... this is correct oo. We have to be content with what we have because we don't know how we would have turned out if things went differently.
