The first step is always the hardest

The first step is always the hardest, the lack of courage to take that step makes many people remain in one position... They keep thinking about the negative part and the risk involved in what they need to do and in the end, they lack the motivation to do it.

I attended a public secondary school, when I was in ss2, our agricultural teacher announced a farming project that all the students needed to partake in and failure to do so would result in losing big marks.

In my school, the authority takes studies seriously and they fail students who didn't do well, and the hardest part is getting promoted from ss2 to ss3, the last set, out of 139 students in the science department, only 65 were promoted and the rest were to repeat the class, this led to some of the student changing school cos not all student can stand repeating class, the humiliation and embarrassment of seeing your peers ahead of you not to talk of some silly ones that will mock you whenever they see you.

We all know the consequence of not doing the project so everyone was determined to do it.

The project involves clearing bushes, making ridges, and planting maize. Some of the students see it as nothing because they do it as work, they clear bushes for people and collect money while some also have a strong hand in doing it and there are timid people like me who can't clear a bush but the teacher doesn't care, everyone must partake and get it done, he doesn't care about the way we get it done.

He took all of us to the school farm and gave us a portion of land to clear, so everyone was a landowner now... Some people gave up saying they didn't know how to cut grass but giving up was never an option for me, I have a friend who is a pro at cutting so I discussed it with him and he said he is going to clear his bush during the weekend and I told him I would tag along.

I left home as early as possible to meet him at his house because we also do lap each other to school to reduce the cost of transport fare, luckily it was a weekend and his father was going out in his car so it was a free transport that day, I was surprised to see some other student in the school planning to clear the bushes on their land.

The work started and within 1 hour, my friend was almost done with his land while I was there cutting the grass on my land from the head, It was a dead end for me but the moment he was done with clearing his own farm, he came to help me and also taught me how to clear the bushes that I will cut from the bottom.

Within a few hours, we were done with the clearing, not to forget that some others also helped me with the bush clearing, one thing about life is you need to be good at something, I was not good at clearing bushes but I was brilliant and I do help some of them with their homework, so that day was a day for them to return the favor.

On Monday, the other students were surprised that some of us already cleared our bushes and by the time they started clearing their bushes, we were already making ridges and planting the maize and cassava.

The ridges were not hard for me cos I did that at home with my parents, It was fun doing that and planting the crops, we got our marks, and those who did not attempt it didn't get it which made them to fail the subject.

By the time we did the second term examination, more than half of the class had to repeat the class, and some were passed on trial.

If only those students that didn't attempt it took a first step by giving it a try, maybe someone would have offered to help them as well but they didn't even try.

Taking that first is very important in achieving a goal. You didn't allow your lack of expertise in cutting grasses discourage you from facing the work head-on.

no way, I face it head on.

Indeed, first step is always hardest. It's the same for writing a research paper. I didn't know how to write and what to write but once I started writing there we no turning back and with time it improved.

yea that is just it.

If you were not brilliant or didn’t have any value you’re adding to their lives, they will never help you out

yea we must be useful too

Hehe... During my time, they did this thing, but it was an optional subject. I think it was paired with TD or Basic Electricity, not sure anymore. Anyway, I didn't offer the subject, but I knew many of my friends who became farmers as a result of the subject.

during my time, agriculture was a compulsory subject for all.... lucky them, there is money in farming...
