We are in the era of civilization, cos I remember when I was in secondary school [ss1] only 2 students out of a class of 89 had a phone. Some of us would rent the phone to play games and chat but things are different now, almost every student has a phone now, so those who do not have it are less than those who own one... Unlike back then only a tiny percentage of the class owns a phone.

I would say the existence of phones caused a lot of damage to students, it exposes them to bad things on the internet, the first time I watched a Bf was with a phone and it happened on one of my friend's phones, we were already in ss3 that time though, but if he was not exposed to porn on the internet, he wouldn't have brought it to school to show us that are his friends...
This is a valid reason why parents should not let their children have a phone at a very young age because they can easily browse through things that they are not meant to check out.
Most of the bad things done by students are being learned from the internet but it is not only about that, Phone is a big distraction.
Currently in the school I attend, while lecturers are lecturing in the class, you will see some students busy on their phones rather than concentrating in the class and learn. I am also guilty of this because sometimes when I am bored of the ongoing class, I start pressing my phone to get rid of the boredom.

Students are also very lazy now, most do not read again since the existence of AI, If you give them an assignment, they make use of AI, give them a test, they find a way to bring their phone inside so they can use AI to answer the questions, so AI kinda makes them unserious with their studies and the brave and stupid ones among them still find a way to bring their phones into the exam hall during examination...They have months, days, and hours to prepare for the exam but they would rather cheat than put in hard work and their medium of cheating is through their phones.
Regarding the hive learner prompt, Phones make things easier for the student in a very bad way hence I think the use of phones should not be entertained in schools.
The advantage of not allowing students to use phones in school is that it will make them more serious with their studies, they will also come together as one with their classmates to tackle assignments and other questions that are giving them issues...
During my time in secondary school, if a student knew the subject and it looked difficult to others, we would gather in two to four to meet the brilliant one and he/she would explain to us how to solve it....but now AI is there to do the job.

I also think for the most part students in school are better off without a phone than with a phone. I don't want to rely heavily on a phone to find most of the questions I have with regards to learning in school lest I default into having the phone do all the job for me and I become redundant more or less.

Students always try to find a way of distraction and smartphones can be the one if allowed in school. That's why I don't think allowing it is not a good thing till the education system makes an update and forces students to be creative even if having a smartphone.
it is a big distraction, you cant force them not to use it if they can stil bring it to school, the same way some sneak it in during exam time, so the best thing is to ban them from bringing it to school.
Carry a phone may be aa basic phone in school for emergency is ok, but a smart phone is big distraction for sure.
In case of emergency, teachers and head of the school have a phone that can be used to send an emergency messages if needed, so emergency isn't an excuse, in the end, they will use it for something else
If only a whole lot of schools can read this. I believe some schools should also regulate the rate they permit student to use phones
