The crowd was chanting for young Demas as he received his trophy for being the best magician at the magic academy. The academy was renowned for training the most exceptional magicians. But for Demas, it was not the end; it was the start of another journey, a journey filled with hardships and struggles. As every magician had to create their own magic spell after their graduation, Demas was no different. He went on a journey to find inspiration for his spell.

His journey started by reaching a jungle. The jungle was filled with monsters, but it was easier for him to defeat all those monsters as he had trained well for these circumstances. He single-handedly wiped out all the monsters in his magical radius, but he was unaware that when the monsters died, they left behind a poisonous gas. The gas was the result of their pain and suffering as they were once humans, transformed into monsters by the mages, and misunderstood by humans and elves throughout their lives.

Demas woke up to find himself in a hut. His body was green due to the poisonous effects. He saw a beautiful elf lady dipping needles in a magical liquid. The elf lady continued her healing procedure by inserting those needles into Demas' body. Demas didn't feel any pain and was mesmerized by the beauty of the elf.

After Demas was properly healed, he came out of the hut to see elves using human technology for their day-to-day lives. A group of elves, who were the royal knights of the queen, were practicing their swordsmanship skills under the divine tree that gave life to the forest. For Demas, all his life, he had thought that swords were for the weak; that's why rule number 1 in the magic academy forbade the use of swords or any physical weapon in combat. But having a glimpse of the combos used by the elf knights changed his perception. It seemed like he had found the inspiration for his very own magic spell creation.

Demas returned to the hut and started creating a spell which he named 'Infinite Daggers'. The way the spell worked was that a dagger was shot at the enemy, and every time it hit the enemy, it returned to the hands of the caster and doubled in number if the enemy was still alive.

Demas left the jungle and returned to the magic academy. He showed his head of the magic council the Infinite Daggers spell. The head of the council advised him to present a different magic spell on the day of the presentation, but Demas thought otherwise. He chose the FREEDOM OF SPEECH over using his spell in PRIVACY. When the head of the council came to know about his intentions, he challenged Demas to a duel to the death. In the battle, the head told Demas that since these infinite daggers took time to multiply, it was proven again that swords were for the weak. But Demas thought otherwise and believed that this spell's speed and technique could be improved. Now Demas was screaming in pain as the head used his advanced spell on Demas, which resulted in Demas' own microorganisms eating his body.

Conclusion:

The story might be weaker from many angles as there are gaps in the fiction, but it shows how the freedom of speech can sometimes even take the lives of people. If we want to change the world, the first thing is survival, and from this perspective, I want to say that I choose PRIVACY over FREEDOM OF SPEECH any day. Demas may have seemed like a hero who died for a greater cause, but there might be some other ways to change the mindset of the magic academy. Perhaps he should have focused on something in private instead of choosing freedom of speech in inappropriate circumstances.

Moral Of The Story:

Sometimes, PRIVACY > FREEDOM OF SPEECH!

I hope you all enjoyed my contest entry for HiveLearners' dilemma about privacy and freedom. I hope it helped you understand the underrated consequences of freedom of speech.

I and my wife were enjoying our regular entrepreneurial days of life and were living a happy lifestyle. I was having my cup of tea while watching my laptop wallpaper of a beautiful sky. She came to me and asked me about my affection to watch the stars. I told her how I have nostalgic feelings from my childhood about watching the brightest sky. She went to our terrace and came back after 20 mins. She looked at me and smiled while typing something on the laptop. I got excited to know about the darkest place in Pakistan on our laptop screen would be a great spot to view the brightest sky. I postponed our meetings to next week, she informed me. I was still shocked, it all was happening too quickly. It was a remote village in Balochistan, the darkest place with the biggest sky.

Hey, I found this story interesting, it reminded me of Harry Potter and I also felt like I was enjoying the movie Avatar with all that about the elves.

You have an interesting way of writing, I congratulate you, it is attractive and at the same time fresh

Hey! It's my first time seeing you in my comment section. I'm quite happy about it. I also respect people who are elder than me for cultural reasons. Your appreciation is even more special considering this.

Here are some details from the story which I didn't write. Demas' name is inspired by word demon. Demas got married to the elf who healed him. They had two sons. One chose to be a magician, while the second one invented daggers technique, inheriting his mother's bloodline. The dagger trick consists of 12 daggers. His sons killed the council when they didn't accept his style. There are more plots in the story, but in the end, I removed overly complex elements to keep my message clear and concise.

The reason for this clarity is that this point is crucial in today's generation, where the line between sending a text and not sending a text is the difference between privacy and freedom of speech. A simple decision to choose freedom of speech over privacy can cost someone's life. The thoughts in my fiction stories are a part of life, sharing my real-life experiences which I can't openly discuss. In these cases, I use fiction as a proxy to talk to my readers about the same topics I would discuss otherwise. The choice of storytelling itself reflects my decision to prioritize privacy over freedom of speech, making it feel alive.

Yes, it's the first time I've been through your wall, I've already followed you, and I hope to be able to tell you if the flow of notifications in my feed doesn't cause me to miss your content (I think I'll painfully have to delete people on my feed because I can't read and comment on everyone, a difficult decision because I read very interesting people). I admire and appreciate your explanation, if I value something it is when someone is offered respect, and from me you have earned it, gentleman. =)

Now that I know more about your vision and the context in which you have given the name to "Demas", the story takes on much more life and strength. It is always a good idea to add a section to our stories telling these types of details (yes, I know it is more work to take the time to write these details, but in the end, they greatly enrich our stories, and it ends up being something more valuable than what we believed).

From my point of view, I think it will be attractive if you develop the story more from both sides of the bloodline, it could even be interesting if one of the plot twists are the battles or alliances between brothers and perhaps even the probable consequences that it brought in the world ends with the council.

I greatly appreciate that you share your opinion about freedom of expression and the way you use the symbolism of daggers to refer to such important topics as freedom of expression and privacy. This definitely marks a thick line in your story, and gives it even more power. I also understand that the name "Demas" is not by accident, because surely this demon lets himself be carried away by his instincts of fury, anger, etc. to break the limits as far as "freedom" and "privacy" are concerned, at least that way. I suspect it now that I think about it.

What you mention about choosing privacy over freedom is very intelligent, I interpret it as a form of self-censorship, and believe me I understand it (I'm not criticizing you, I want to make it clear), and the truth is I think it must make you feel uncomfortable, perhaps even frustrated by not being able to openly express what you want, since you fear for your privacy.

I must tell you that I have personally experienced the violation of privacy, living in a country where these rights are not usually respected (socialist regime, Venezuela) and are openly violated. That's why I identify with what you express.

Very interesting to have this exchange with you, and whenever I have time I will return here.

Yup, we sometimes can't catch up with the content creators we want to read. Although now, new notification features allow us to get notified whenever our favorite content creator makes a post. Ecency favorites and Friday bot /monitor command are just some of the features I use.

It is always a good idea to add a section to our stories telling these types of details

But my intention here was just to deliver the message of the consequences of freedom of speech. If I had added the text in the blog, it might distract them. So I decided to skip it this time. But I did quote the feedback. Maybe in the end, I might include it as spoiler text (a click to reveal/read text).

symbolism of daggers to refer to such important topics as freedom of expression

Indeed, daggers here reflect taboos of society which might be acceptable in different situations but not in the current circumstances. It takes time for people to understand the normal that is currently not normal.

Other than what you just said above, which is correct, names like Qasim (which is my real name and Q in dlmmqb stands for Qasim) are pronounced in two steps, like Qa-sim. The simplicity and uniqueness of it are some of the reasons too.

Thanks for the flattering and clever way to compliment. But I am not too intelligent. I first write in Urdu and then translate it into English, thus it's sometimes confusing for me to write. For example, here at the start of the story, I use the word "chanting," but I am not sure if it's the right word for clapping as the crowd was standing, clapping, and hooting too. I can only try, but still, I am left with a lot of doubts sometimes.

Thanks for updating me that you are from Venezuela; I am from Pakistan. I also share the same faith as you.

This is very interesting and I am grateful to you that you decided to share something so personal.

I was about to ask you the meaning of the acronyms in your profile, since I'm quite curious about it. I suspect they represent something quite important to you.

Regarding the word "chanting" I also have my doubts, but this is because the translator assumes the word in a possible context that is not always the correct one (due to artificial intelligence mechanisms that take as an example the greatest number of contexts in that word is used correctly), but really the word "chanting" refers to when groups of people are making "praises", "singing", or a kind of religious, cultural or traditional tribute to something or someone. In the case of your story, I understand that they are celebrating the protagonist's achievement as the best magician in the academy, so I would use the word "acclaiming" or "cheering", perhaps it is more appropriate, in reality I would have to know what words you would use in your native language to give it the appropriate meaning.

And this is what often happens with translators, they are of great help in breaking down communication barriers, but in these cases like the one in your story, the meaning of a story can significantly change between "singing" the name to "acclaiming it", Well, the story goes from having a religious scenario (with "chanting" word) to an adventure scenario (with "singing" or "aclaiming" word). So there is still a long way to go when it comes to translators and AI, but in general terms I think we are making progress (I apologize for showing my enthusiasm about it, but I think it is something that contributes to humanity if used correctly).

Pakistan is a country with an amazing culture, I greatly admire its gastronomy. Every time I can I watch videos of their street food, so I can learn and find out what the life of the average Pakistani is like, the one who represents the country.

Talking about Venezuela is hard for me, it is not something I like to do because I have a very harsh and controversial opinion about it, due to great tragedies that I still have a hard time overcoming, and in order not to go into too many details, I will only tell you that it is a beautiful country, but for me it represents pain and infinite difficulties of survival.

I want to tell you that I really enjoy writing with you, gentleman.

It was a fantastic fictional story that was really impressive. I am impressed to see how beautifully you have presented your thoughts through the fiction. I loved the way.
Indeed freedom of speech sometimes brings trouble for us and causes death. I also think privacy is more important than freedom of speech and your fictional story is a message for everyone.

Thanks for the compliments, glad to know that we think alike.

This is how AI art should be used. *Source + not the main focus, the story was decent.

Also privacy > Freedom.

People will be people, lets leave it at that. But what we really need is transparency for companies like Facebook.

I really don't like why people are forced to hand over all the personal information they have when asked. But it takes months and court hearings for the government to even take a peak as to how a company is treating is employees.

Thanks for the compliment on AI art usage. I think this is my first time using it.

For companies, this also means respecting users' privacy.

It's basically because of corporate culture.

I enjoyed the whole fiction. Demas must have listened to the head(in my opinion) because then he might not have been feeling the pain at the end.
There is a difference between stubborn behaviour and freedom of speech. One must not lose his senses. That's what demas did. He lost his senses and in the name of freedom of speech he showed the stubborn behaviour.

Overall the story was great, dlm.

then he might not have been feeling the pain at the end.

He actually died in the end. Microorganisms ate his body. ;)

that's what demas did

That's another way to look at it :)

Thanks for the feedback.

I didn’t get much from story but I totally comport to conclusion that privacy must be prioritised over freedom of speech.
Freedom of speech is our basic right. It’s pouring out what we have inside of us but if our privacy is breached ,we will lose real one inside of us and then what’s motive behind freedom of speech when we are hollow.

 last year

Hmmmm, that's another way to look at it. When privacy is lost, we try to be someone else than who we truly are.

wow O.O. dlm telling stories now. i also would go with privacy ;3

well i thought you were introvert right? XD. it's easier to be quiet and do nothing at least we make sure we are protecting ourself and our loved ones. Even if we do speak out with our "freedom of expression" usually that just gets us trouble or more work :P or am i wrong? I'm totally fine keeping my own opinion. I dont need to prove others wrong or myself right :3. i think u feel the same right?

I somewhat agree with your analogy.

Thanks for passing by, Glad to know you SOMEWHAT agree but what parts you disagree about? Maybe it gives me a chance to improve or think from another angle next time.

I just disagree with the part that the main character died because of his decision.
