Social media is filled with hate against dunk comedy, but is this really dunk comedy? Are you a follower of this dark humor? Is it affecting the mental level of youth? Who is involved in spreading this type of lethal comedy? Does it belong to the Gen Z era? Let me address all these questions within this blog.

Dunk comedy involves sarcasm directed at someone in the name of roasting. The comedians do not consider whether their humor affects someone's personal life or whether this sort of unethical comedy harms individuals through dark jokes. Yet, they justify it as just fun and entertainment. In society, where practical jokes are considered humorous, dunk comedy is viewed the same way. However, this sort of fun becomes more toxic when the subject is targeted on a moral basis.

When it remains only humour?

When roasting doesn’t cross its boundaries, fun remains fun, but when it goes too far, it becomes lethal. Why did I start this discussion? It has been years since the Ducky-Sham controversy emerged. Remaining unbiased, I must conclude that Ducky, aka Saad, targeted Sham’s wife, orchestrated an attack on him, and even slapped him publicly. Does it suit content creators to spread such hate?

Apart from this, Ducky was involved in a blame game, accusing Sham of showcasing his wife to gain followers and attention. But after seven years, Ducky suddenly shifted from roasting videos to daily vlogs when he got married. The public remained confused about whom to support and whom to oppose.

Personally, I was devastated when YouTube awarded the Public Figure Award to Ducky back in 2017 instead of Kitchen with Amna. I was literally like, Does a roaster deserve our attention and time? Is the Pakistani public truly honest in watching such content?

How do we know about it ?

Let's move to another example of dunk comedy that recently arose in India. A show named India Got Latent featured inappropriate content in which famous influencers Ranveer Allahbadia and Samay Raina used dark humor to entertain the public. This show was notorious for its comedy, which included sex-related and other underbelly jokes. The public stood against such content. Why? Because adults were getting influenced. The elite class doesn’t watch or bother about these subjects, but middle-class minds are affected the most. What they see on screen gets implemented in real life.

Things become messy when such incidents happen on a daily basis. Imagine you are traveling on a local bus, and someone passes body-shaming comments toward you or targets your dress. Will you be able to tolerate it? For them, it may be just fun, but for you, this humiliation could cause mental stress.

To all those who consider themselves Gen Z followers and label ethical people as old-fashioned, you must relearn your moralities. It’s all about the generation gap, not about getting "cool" expressions. Bullying anyone in the name of humor isn’t justified.

I remember my teacher, Sir Bilal, who taught us how practical jokes can be damaging. Taking someone’s seat or laughing at someone slipping or falling isn’t right. It shows how much your moral values have declined. It won’t be long before people start committing suicide when their stress levels reach a threshold after being bullied.

How is this toxicity circulating?

This trend is more significant in the Middle East, where there is public chaos, but education is lagging behind gadgets and social media. People may become celebrities, but they have no sense of how to speak in public. Why are crimes becoming more common? Because people consider it fun to get jailed or bailed.

I remember numerous cases in Pakistan where the elite class committed crimes while being over-drunk, yet no laws were able to punish them. They roam publicly, showcasing how they have overthrown laws and moralities. It’s not about the crime, it’s about the money your dad has. It’s large enough to get you out, even if you take someone’s life.

Concluding this debate, I must say that these content creators must be stopped from spoiling young minds. If they are not getting banned, they should at least create content that is entertaining but does not cross boundaries.

I start for this:

Bullying anyone in the name of humor isn’t justified.

Agree with you, it cannot be justified, or seem funny, to make fun of someone for a problem or condition they have, there must be respect for people. Personally I have suffered bullying (and I still suffer) of a large number of number of people for being poor, for living in this sector and many other things. This makes the person live bitter and frustrated, my anxiety levels only increased for years, creating traumas.

"Z" believe that kind of humor is very fun, and stinks. Who we are "X", we miss the humor of our times, where funny jokes were really made, based on imitations, healthy humor if you ask me.

Now, today, there are only a lot of offensive idiots and without respect for life, society and values.

The world is in reverse.
