Recently I came to understand that good can come out of anything; it just depends on our motives and mindset.
Peer pressure is known to be one of the strongest forces controlling our actions and inactions. A lot of people in the world don't even have personal opinions, the majority of the things they do are motivated by what their peers are doing, popularly tagged as what is trending.
Unfortunately, those things are mostly not fit for us but because we feel our mates are doing it, we put ourselves under unnecessary pressure to play along.
Most people are into one act or the other today because of this very kind of pressure. Sometimes no one even needs to talk to you to join the trend but the force will seek you out and if you are the type that doesn't have a strong will, you will bow.
This is why the environment plays a crucial role in shaping our lives, if for instance one lives in a kind of environment where all his/her peers are focused on profitable and decent things, that force will be what will drive every person there. It is so sad that we hardly find such environments nowadays.
Nevertheless, the fact that we live in a world where the trending things among our peers are majorly evil doesn't mean that we can't craft good out of what they are suggesting.
We don't have to follow their path, we can create a system to channel that pressure into motivation to make us work harder to achieve our goals.
I live in a community where my peers are called "money men." Young people like myself own houses and scary assets but their source of wealth isn't clean
It's funny how that life suddenly looks like if you are not playing along, you are committing an offense.
Ideally, it even hurts to see your peers securing assets and getting ready for the future and you seem not to be catching up.
A few years ago, some of my friends who chose to go that way came to give me reasons why I must come on board. Some had to go the extra mile to show me the large figures in their bank accounts.
But I don't just see my future in something like that. So, I decided to use their success as motivation to double up my hustle.
Each time I hear that someone I know bought a car, I become more serious in building myself. I know I am not as wealthy as some of them are but I am so happy that today I can settle my bills, afford my basic needs and also support my family without doing anything illegal.
It is a big achievement for me and I won't stop building and upgrading until I hit the mark. One thing I always encourage myself with is that I am not in competition with anyone, my aim is to become the best version.
This same kind of pressure led many to an early grave but it isn't supposed to be so, peers can only suggest, the power to decide rests in our hands. The fact that everyone is doing it doesn't mean you must do it too, you can choose to take a different path and still arrive at your destination.
