In the year 2014, the Boko Haram group attacked a school in Chibok, Maiduguri, Borno state, Nigeria abducting about 276 young ladies between the ages of 16-18 according to a report.
I can remember vividly that year, I was still in secondary school when it happened. The news shook the entire country.
The government tried to recover them but to no avail. It was allegedly said that some of them were forced to marry some of the terrorists and some were sold into slavery.
A few years ago, they said some of them were released but it hurts me the most instead of making me happy. Imagine how they must have messed them up.
Only God knows what they have done with those innocent girls and after wasting years out of their lives they now throw them back into society.
Where exactly will they start from? How will they cope with society? If at all our government was a responsible one, it wouldn't have bothered me but the reverse is the case.
The best they might do for those victims is to clothe them for a few days, give them a little amount of money then capture them on television, instead of making them the government's responsibility and giving them room to start life again.
Most times, when I remember the event of the Chibok girls, the question that often comes into my mind is, what if my sister was one of them?
What if one of my relatives was there? Just imagine the kind of pain the victim's families are going through. This is something that will never be erased from their memory. The sting is not different from that of death.
Why those innocent poor girls? If it was not just politics, if they were after getting the government's attention, they could have kidnapped senators or any political leader who is well recognized.
The poor are no longer safe, they are just like specimens for experiments. The government and its enemies use them for selfish ambitions to gain attention to themselves.
I am still grieved over the issue of the Chibok girls. It's over a decade now, only God knows what they have become by now. But what can we do? My earnest prayer is that something like that should never repeat itself in the country.
The effect of the event
Prior to the time of the abduction, a lot of crimes were not prevalent in the country. Then, I only heard about kidnapping in the news or watched it in movies but today it's everywhere.
It's as if it has revealed the weaknesses of the country. After that abduction was successful, they got more courage and conducted many others, some that courage and conducted many others, some were even kept hidden.
To date, some Northern parts of Nigeria are still not safe. The Boko Haram terrorist group is still making life unbearable there.
For that reason, many people dread going to school in that region. Personally, I won't jeopardize my life in school where I won't be able to study comfortably and sleep with one mind. Imagine you are in the lecture hall and suddenly you hear a gunshot, God forbid though.
The event of the abduction happened years back, but many people won't like to stay in that location because something like that might still happen.
Up till now, anywhere you mentioned Chibok in the middle belt and Northern Nigeria, the first thing that will come into people's minds is the 2014 abduction.
Is there any way out?
Honestly, I can't tell, Boko Haram seems to be becoming stronger every day, and we have lost a lot of soldiers already fighting them.
The only thing I can suggest is people should live with caution and always be alert. We should avoid settling in areas that are facing security challenges and also avoid sending our children to school in such places no matter how cheap and affordable it is.
This might not solve the problem completely but it might be of a little help.
Truly a sad history to remember. All these are events that brings back emotions and bad reflections
Every government tenure in this country Nigeria 🇳🇬 has left us with bad memories and it continues to worsen.
These girls will never be the same again no matter how hard they try to forget what they faced. Its a sad one and shame to our government
Honestly, each time I remember this event it leaves me sad. I just hope that things will get better in this country someday.
Thanks for reading ma
A sad one indeed. I believe too that God’s Grace will definitely locate Nigeria someday.

The abduction of the chibuk girls is a memory no one will ever forget, the events brought kidnapping to another level. I could remember how scared my parents were when the event occurred. Everyone felt like their children might be next. Those girls became victims of a failed government.
