Teaching the importance of thyroid screening in my job

Hi 👋🏻 My good friends on the hive, today I want to talk to you a little about my job.

One of the things our staff does at the health center is to mandatorily take samples from all newborns for hypothyroidism screening.

The goal of this program is the early identification of congenital hypothyroid patients.

Let me give you a general overview!!! Of course, you may know that congenital thyroid screening is an important test that is performed to detect thyroid disorders in newborns early. These disorders can have serious effects on the baby's growth and development.

Key points about congenital thyroid screening:

  1. Purpose: To identify newborns with congenital hypothyroidism so that early treatment can be initiated and serious complications can be prevented.

  1. When to do it: This test is usually done in the first few days of a baby's life (usually between 3 and 5 days after birth).

  2. How the test is done: A blood sample from the baby is usually used to measure thyroid hormone levels.

  3. Importance of treatment: If hypothyroidism is identified, treatment with thyroid hormones is usually started quickly, which can help the baby grow and develop normally.

  4. Complications of not treating: Failure to identify and treat it in time can lead to serious problems such as developmental delays, learning difficulties, and other disorders.

This screening is very important as a preventive measure and can improve the lives of babies.

Unfortunately, there are families who do not cooperate with us, and we have to take thyroid samples from their babies after several home consultation sessions. And this photo I shared with you is an example of these cases. We have to continue working with high sensitivity in order to save the child's life.
