Speaking of Nigeria, tipping is not a mandatory thing. I don't know if such places exist in the country, but I have never been to a place where giving tips is a must. Most times, people give tips just to appreciate a product or service they did enjoy, while there are those who tip just to get recognized at a particular place.
I don't have issues with why anyone should give a tip as long as you are not forced to do so, and the only thing that pisses me off is when people who give tips are treated differently from those who don't give tips. I see these happen a lot in banks, gas stations, and even government organizations, which makes zero sense to me.
This is a very broad thing, and it happens a lot, which means there are a lot of salespeople and service providers expecting that tip, not minding if you have an extra to spare or not. Sometimes, you don't even enjoy their services, but they still want something from you.
I have seen those who ask politely even though they don't deserve it, while there are those who would start acting up when they know you are a regular but don't give tips. Do they even consider what their customers purse looks like?
I remembered a time during the petroleum scarcity issue in Nigeria. One of the most annoying places to purchase gas from was the only place we could purchase from in my area, and we didn't have a choice.
The majority of the attendants were rude not to even speak of their manager, who makes terrible judgment when customers insist on him interfering with cases; they just speak anyhow, and I always wondered how they all got that habit. We practically know that their meter had been tampered with, so there is nothing about that place that would interest you or make you want to give tips, but some people still do because they want to be treated specially.
To cut the long story short, we were in this long queue that day when a vehicle drove in and about three of the gas attendants left their positions just to bring the man to their pump, and it crossed my mind that he must be a regular tipper. But trust Nigerians, people demanded that the man joined the queue or nothing. It led to a noise, and they had to stop selling just to disperse the angry crowd.
Situations like that make no sense to me and it's a dent on the already terrible reputation the gas station had initially. If I were the owner of the gas station, those three attendants better have a good explanation beyond the tip they are getting if they still want the job because tipping is optional and shouldn't make anyone special.
There are these sets who get angry because you used to tip them but didn't do just that one time. It annoys them that they have treated you specially and got nothing in the end.
I believe that as long as customers have paid for the product or service rendered to them, they have no other obligations to you. Whatever they do after is their choice, and as a product seller or service provider, you shouldn't expect more even when you have done more than your best.
I can like your service and not have something to spare as giving a cash tip, but I can recommend your service to someone who can as well recommend it, and before you know it, you can make a hundred times whatever tip I was supposed to give you that day but didn't have.
There is a dispatch rider I used sometimes ago, and this guy moves like Flash. He doesn't charge too much and has a good customer relationship. Honestly, I didn't start tipping on the first day we met, but we built a bond. I started adding something to his fee at some point, and even when the goods recipient tips him, he still tells me about it.
Whenever anyone needed a dispatch, I recommended him, and even though I barely use his service now, we still communicate pretty well, and I believe that's how people grow.
Tips should be given at free will, and I enjoy doing it when I have extra on me, but you can't force me to do so. Plus, I don't expect a special treatment from you because of the tip. I still see myself as a regular customer and just want you to do whatever you are meant to do for me in exchange for my money.

Tipping is not compulsory but it has become so frequent that everyone expects tips for providing a service and not it turned into a bad culture in my opinion. If you give tips, then you can see different behaviors form them.
Bad culture, I think that's the right word because not being treated fairly because you don't give tips is becoming a norm in different parts of the world. These service providers are forgetting that these terrible habits have terrible implications on their businesses.
Tipping is not sopposed to be compulsory. Just that people are treated differently because of tipping just like you mentioned.
Thanks for sharing
That's a really good point, some people are being treated differently because they give tips at the detriment of other customers 🥲
