Misinformation & Manipulation.

While preparing students for the future through education, I think it's very important that they are familiar with the past (history) because of how it can help them understand the complexities that have shaped human societies, cultures, and nations. The importance of having historical knowledge can't be quantified, and I believe it's one of the ways we can raise responsible citizens in today's society because when people are well informed about the past, they can't make reasonable decisions about the future.

Until now, I didn't think of how including history in school curriculum could be beneficial to students, but after thinking about it critically, I concluded that this would be a great idea.

Growing up, a lot of us didn't learn much about history in school. As a student, learning about history in school ended with social studies, and that was in Junior high school. Being a science student, I never had anything to do with history anymore in school. Majority of the historical knowledge we have today were from our parents, current affairs, and probably historical movies that have become a trend in movie industries across the world.

Regardless of where we learned from, I think there are some irregularities with learning history, especially from our parents or elders, because some of them indirectly impose their beliefs and thoughts about past events. They edit information, and it's not a good thing judging by how this wrong information has affected us negatively.

Whenever I think of the tribal and ethnic wars in Nigeria, it makes me sad because these things didn't start today. Many of us today participate in ethnic and tribal conflict despite the fact that it started with our forefathers, many generations before now, but we act based on the distorted historical stories passed down from one generation to another, and that's why Nigeria as a nation is stagnant.

We focus more on our differences and find faults in everything that has to do with another tribe or ethnicity just of we were told. This lack of unity is the same reason why we can't even appoint a proper leader for the nation, and without fixing things from the grassroots, we will be stuck in all of these problems forever.

I believe that kids today are the grassroots, and they can make amendments in the future if only they get to understand their history. We have to keep all that adulterated history away from them, or else they will continue from where our elders stopped.

Including history as a part of the school curriculum can help students learn about the exact thing that happened in history, and that will go a long way in making amendments in the country. Immediately this curriculum of a thing is implemented, I believe it would be the end of misinformation, as these kids can even educate their parents about the things that really happened.

Aside from the negative effect and implications of twisting history, I believe students can draw inspiration from past events. We have got good leaders who had a significant impact on the affairs of the country, and these people can be role models for the younger generations. Taking history classes seriously will make a lot of difference in the world, not just today but in the future as well.
