Happiness as most of us know is an emotion which all humans desire to have, it's a state of being at peace with yourself and things around you irrespective of negative vibes around you in terms of lack, maybe finiancially, sickness, not achieving your goals at expected time or just anything that tends to want to drain our happiness.
When you are happy, you function better in the things you do, have you ever been a situation were you felt sad? You don't get motivated to do anything, and time keeps going without you achieving anything , so you see, its better to brighten up your mood and be happy because happiness brings about more productivity/creativity within you.
You also feel much more healthier and energised when happy.
To me, happiness is a choice, you have to be intentionally about it, tell yourself its your life, you can control your emotions, filter away the negatives and focus more on the posotive side of life that gives you joy,
Appreciate your little winnings
No matter how small a thing or amount i achieve from my job for example, I'm always happy, at least I created a solution and someone found it worthy of paying me something, so that make a me happy.
love yourself, no one is perfect
There was a time, i always felt like I needed to add more weight because I felt like I was too slim at my age and a mother of two, but someone told me once with surprise on her face that I don't know how lucky I am to still have my shape and belly intacts after two kids, she wished she had my body type, but still she still appreciates her shape now, so who am I not to be happy for how I look, no matter how you look, be happy and greatful, if you can work out, do it, and make yourself happy, if you can't, still be happy with yourself.
Take time to take care of yourself
This aspect is very important, just like @nkemakonam89 posted some few days back, take your self out, spend quality time to have a me time, away from stress, work, even families at times, this helps me relieve stress, re-energises me, spend some money on yourself, buy good food, eat well, for some putting on new goid clothes makes them happy, these i have seen so many times, just do what you feel will make you happy, i have a sister of mine that goes swimming just to make herself happy, yours migbt be foot ball, just do it.
sometimes, my me time is just dedicated to sleep, after depriving myself some for a while due to hectic week, i just have my me time to sleep enough a day, i wake up happy and renergised.
Spend time with people you care about
Yea, living a lonely life is not so good, even if it is one person you can trust, share your innermost worry with them, they might not have a solution to you, but just baring your mind out gives relieves at the end of the day unburdens you and create some space for a little happiness.
Also spending time with your loved ones can also make you happy, for me, whenever I spend time with my family members, both extended, the joy of being around them, sharing things together, having dinner cooked by my mum especially makes me happy.
There was a time in my life I used to be very depressed because of the negative situation I found myself, do you know that depression causes self hatred and blinds your eyes to see little things you should be grateful for, it took me a while, when I started appreciating little things like the very breath I have, when I witnessed people paying huge amount of money for oxygen we inhale free of charge, my mindset changed, i don't worry about things I have no control over, the ones I can work out, i try to do my best at it, at the end of the day, i feel contented and happy, my past is gone, I'm enjoying this present life, every moment, and i have hope that the future will be better.
I'm also very happy when I can reach out to people who needs help, whenever I find myself causing joy to someone that was in lack maybe in resources I can afford, or just a mere word of encouragement to light up their mood, it makes me happy.
True happiness is within your reach, you just need to reach out and grab it wholeheartedly , you deserve to be happy no matter what it where you find yourself, BE HAPPY!

I agree with you that happiness is there for the taking. We don't need to find it elsewhere. Sometimes it is amusing how some of us tend to act like it is difficult to be happy :)
It's important to be happy, in as much as it's a choice? Alot of people around you needs you to be happy, for your happiness attracts theirs and Just like you said,

Today, we've forgotten to love ourselves. By taking time to unwind and pursue our passions outside of our daily routines.
It only takes a while for small victories to add up to major accomplishments, even though we frequently dismiss them as pointless.
