It is no longer a hidden fact that social media that technology has taken over today's world and one aspect that has ganered world wide usage by both the young and old but most especially the younger generation is the use of social media lucky enough I was born in the era where there was none, I also experienced the introduction and now it is a very vital part of our lives, I believe most of us can't go a day without visiting social media, it is a fact to say even most people are addicted to the use of social media.
Sometimes I'm amazed when I see what the younger generation do withe the same smart device and internet connection I have that I begin to wonder if their brain was wired specially fo this times, recently, there have been a debate about the implementation of social media as one of the subjects studied in high school, if it will be beneficial or add further woe to what we see students do on social media these days,as it is now common for most student to own a smart device.
In my opinion, I believe this implementation is long overdue, as social media due to its addicting nature or effect on students, it is important that they are tutored on what should be prioritized while using social media,
One important aspect is the aspect of privatization and security, most kids of nowadays don't know what is referred to as private anymore, they live their lives on social media, exposing themselves to threat, I recently heard a sorry of hoe a young boy of 13 years cleared his mum's account to fraudsters online, so you see why it is important for this knowledge to be inculcated in them.
Another aspect is making sure they sustain a perfect mental health while using social media. Fake like, tools, are common online, the fake life gang makes the students feel insecure about themselves, and forcing them to want to involve themselves in vices, all to feel among. There are also trolls and cyber bullies online, and students need to be educated on how to overcome or live above them so they don't mess with their mental state of mind.
One major downside would be in the lack of qualified tutors as social media as a course in social media is not yet studied in any Nigeria university or instance, giving them the right qualification to the rightly teach social media in high schools, as I stated, the children of nowadays are even more intelligent in the use of social media, so a highly traned or more experience hand is needed.
implementing this subject in schools would also help them learn about career choices using the social media offers, no longer would our graduates fill up the employment market, if students already know what they want from this early beginning,
In conclusion, whether or not to teach social media in high schools is a vital topic that requires careful consideration of the pros and cons. When done, then an informed decision that best serves the needs of their students.
this is very interesting topic, thankyou for sharing your thoughts😊
