I love to study and talk about history, including our world history as humanity and my local history. I wrote one time about how unfair and how world powers used Latin American countries as puppets during the Paraguay War, in which Brazil played a big role. The current state of our country in corruption and bad management is all justified if you look back to our history since the Portuguese colonized our country. You can't be proud of our history, our independence was a bad joke not because I liked the Portuguese people who were ripping off the gold and natural resources of the country, but because they continued to do that after the independence. We continued with a king who was the son of the Portuguese king João VI, an independent country with a king with our exploiter nationality.
However, I as a Brazilian need to be proud of my roots, my culture in food, music and way of living (excluding of course the bad things). One of the worst things that happened in Brazil was slavery. The slavery period started back in the colonial times around the 1500's and just ended in 1888 right before our country started as a Republic in 1889. The slavery market brought many Africans from different countries to Brazil. Most came from countries colonized by the Portuguese like Angola and Moçambique, but there were from other places as well like Nigeria, Zaire, Congo and Zimbabwe.
Humanity has always had in its general history stories about humans putting others from the same species as a second-level species. Slaves in Brazil weren't different, they were treated as equal like non-humans. Rich families had a hierarchy by the number of slaves that they had on their property and they were used to do free dirty work like house cleaning, cooking, farming and even taking care of the kids of the rich people. The slavery of black people was a good alternative since the Europeans failed to enslave the American aboriginal people since they had a high rate of mortality with the European presence.
Even after the African origin people were freed in 1888, their descendants still suffered from prejudice in the country even though were the majority of the population. Most of their descendants are still the big majority of poor people in there. So I can say that slavery was a very bad time in the country despite of that thanks of this forced migration to our country, we have many influences of African culture in Food, music and even some words in our dictionary.
Here in Canada I met Nigerians and when they presented their food to us, I was amazed how similar was to Brazilian food. The Yam and okra for example, vegetables used in African cuisine are still used a lot in Brazil. However, I wish that any society doesn't ever slave anyone again. We grew as a species and this type of practice is for sure unwanted. We fight for equal rights between each other so hopefully we won't see that again.

O mercado de escravos trouxe muitos africanos de diferentes países para o Brasil. A maioria veio de países colonizados pelos portugueses, como Angola e Moçambique, mas também havia de outros lugares, como Nigéria, Zaire, Congo e Zimbábue.
A humanidade sempre teve em sua história geral histórias sobre humanos colocando outros da mesma espécie como uma espécie de segundo nível. Os escravos no Brasil não eram diferentes, eles eram tratados como iguais, como não humanos. As famílias ricas tinham uma hierarquia pelo número de escravos que tinham em suas propriedades e eles eram usados para fazer trabalhos sujos gratuitos como limpeza de casa, cozinhar, agricultura e até mesmo cuidar dos filhos dos ricos. A escravidão de negros era uma boa alternativa, já que os europeus falharam em escravizar os aborígenes americanos, já que eles tinham uma alta taxa de mortalidade com a presença europeia.
Mesmo depois que os povos de origem africana foram libertados em 1888, seus descendentes ainda sofriam preconceito no país, embora fossem a maioria da população. A maioria de seus descendentes ainda é a grande maioria dos pobres de lá. Então posso dizer que a escravidão foi uma época muito ruim no país, apesar disso, graças a essa migração forçada para o nosso país, temos muitas influências da cultura africana na comida, na música e até mesmo em algumas palavras do nosso dicionário.
Aqui no Canadá, conheci nigerianos e quando eles nos apresentaram sua comida, fiquei surpreso com o quão semelhante era à comida brasileira. O inhame e o quiabo, por exemplo, vegetais usados na culinária africana, ainda são muito usados no Brasil. No entanto, desejo que nenhuma sociedade escravize ninguém novamente. Crescemos como espécie e esse tipo de prática é certamente indesejado. Lutamos por direitos iguais entre nós, então espero que não vejamos isso de novo.
Mandou bem na reflexão! A história do Brasil é cheia de injustiça, e muita coisa errada de hoje vem de lá de trás. Mas, como você disse, nossa cultura é incrível, e a gente tem que valorizar o que é nosso enquanto aprende com os erros do passado.

Todo mundo fala de paises como Canada e EUA que cresceram com imigrantes e tem influencias de imigrantes, mas a imigração que ocorreu no Brasil é bastante enraizada, tb somos um pais que crescemos por culturas externas, principalmente Portuguesa e Africana e fez um mistureba interessante em questões culturais por mais que o passado histórico seja horrivel!

A lot of Brazilian cuisine came from African roots, just like so much southern food in the US. I was reading up on some history yesterday from Peru and they freed the slaves after the revolution. Racial prejudice is a phenomenon world wide sadly. I have met people who hated me just because I'm American, I've met black people in the US in Philadelphia who absolutely hate all white people and won't do business with them or even talk to them. In China they put Muslims in retraining camps because they aren't Chinese enough. This world still has a lot of racism and I doubt it will ever end completely, and it's stupid is the real irony...
Slavery will undoubtedly always be part of human societies too, it exists in China and other nations under a different name, but it's the same thing. It's sad that any human thinks they can own another, but we live in a messed up world my friend. We are insulated from it to an extent living where we do!

slavery is an absurd vocab, as much I dislike slavery, I dislike people who use the term of slavery to justify themselves not doing what they should do or they are bound to... for example not working hard, excuses not to work overtime, bashing their employer for not granting their lazy time, many more...
The term of slavery should refer to basic human right, for example equality in right, opportunity to rest and boundaries between personal and profesional. Not for bitching about low pay, asking to work 20 hours a week and getting paid for full term, and eligibility to come and leave office as they like, not as they are needed.
