When we are young we do dumb things and we think that nobody will see if we break the law. Sometimes some law enforcement officer gets us when we are doing these things. It isn't something that I am proud of, but in Brazil what happens is that we have a bad culture while driving. Since there aren't many officers around to see how we are driving we tend to make a prohibited turn, or parking in a prohibited place we think some dumb stuff like "Oh nobody is watching so I will do it". And on top of that when a police officer sees you doing this, it is pretty common to exit the problem by paying some "coffee money" to the officers.
I think I had some interactions with police officers, but none of them brought me to prison. The last one was very dumb. I was going to my girlfriend's place (my current wife) and I was late for a Christmas supper, she was calling me all the time saying that I was late and making me nervous. There is a spot near her parents' home where people usually do a prohibited turn to save time, and I made it a couple of times in the past, but I stopped doing that since I grew a bit mentally. However, that day I was in despair so I make this forbidden turn and then I saw an officer standing and taking notes. And he was asking me to stop. I stopped and he came by. I got out of my car and he started with "You know that it is forbidden to do this turn, right?". I told him that yes, that I understood that I was doing something wrong, and that I agree to face the consequences of a fine. But then, my wife continued to call me, like 3-4 times. But I didn't get it because I was busy! Then the officer said that I could talk for a moment on the phone, and then I think he could listen to my wife screaming "Where are you? Everybody is waiting for you? ". I told her that I was busy solving a problem. The officer started to laugh and said: "I think you should go".
In the end, I didn't receive any ticket from that event. But it always hurt to receive a ticket even nowadays mainly because you don't notice when you did something wrong while driving, sometimes when you are late and don't notice that you were above speed limits. In my last two tickets I didn't have any interaction with any officer, but still my mind, my inner self complains "Come on you did something against the rules again". Usually, we see lots of people around breaking driving rules, why do we start to create a culture that it is normal to drive like that until we receive a ticket? Our morals and ethics that we learn from our parents just fail when we do that! I had some other interactions with police enforcement but this one was one of my worst, I had another one that I am not proud of it but also stays for another time.
Wow... It's not easy at all. Being on the right side of the law can be so difficult especially when it's so easy to cross the line.
However, I just have to say, I love how your worst encounter with police is just over a parking ticket. For so many of us on this side of the world, it's way worse and we didn't even do anything!
Thank you for sharing this with us.
Yes police can be corrupt right? when they are meant to protect citizens! I only heard stories about that but I know that these stories are true!

You are lucky to have met an understanding officer, there are only a few officers that won't pounce on you at any chance they get.
