This term has appeared lately, but before social media existed, humans gossiped around. They were just called as gossip. And the product of these gossips was the cultural local myths such as "if you don't wear a jacket, you will get a cold". So 'fake news' is something that already existed, what changed is how fast they spread and in a larger proportion compared to the old school gossiping. Who is guilty? The influencer who gets rewarded? Or humans who get lazy in verifying the information?
I have a freelancer working in medical market research analysis. I have been doing it for some years. Depending on the project, they usually ask for a certain disease patient where they get informed about new medicines or about the disease. I remember a couple of years ago, the top answers were just googling or visiting a website focused on health or their disease. But recently I participated in one project and saw this trending change.They still google, go to specific websites, but the big winner is Facebook groups or Instagram. That is amazing how powerful these social media are. You can go to specific groups and exchange information with other patients or even medical doctors or researchers who work specifically with that disease.
So in this side of social media is interesting, because the chances that you meet someone with your disease are low most of the time. Genetic diseases aren't so common. And sometimes your city doesn't have a specialist well informed about it. So social media helps you achieve some information in an easier and more digestible way. However, people need to be more cautious and less lazy. Even if you receive information in a theoretically safe place like a group specialized in this disease, you need to check the information by yourself. So ok, if you read that a treatment is being used for your condition, just do a simple Google and check a health authority website or some research articles to check if it is true.
It is easy to find 'fake news in social media. I had a terrible rash on my face that bothered me a lot. So I started to search online if I found something interesting to try that could help me. I tried some cosmetics that were advertised as made for men, but with not much help. So I found an influencer on YouTube who gives reviews about products, and I liked him very much because he does research about every component in the products and cite articles associated with these products. He even released a brand by himself with I bought the face moisturizer and I have been using it for months already, and helped me a lot with my problem. In this case, this influencer deserves what he probably got paid for doing his videos.
Despite citing a case of a good influencer, there are plenty of bad ones, but the problem isn't them, but the people who give attention to them.
