Those newspapers before internet only had limited information everyday, it wasn't updating real time
And knowledge was stored in those books in libraries or shops that's why back then libraries used to be full of those curious people.
But now? We can get information and knowledge about anything on the internet with the one click - Yet people aren't as smart or logical as before, they misinterpret simple information and are deceived easily with false info.
Is Easy Access to Info or Knowledge a blessing?
Majority of people are in benefit who knows the right way to use info or knowledge with that quick access but it is opposite if you don't know the good way to utilize that knowledge you're getting.
Like most of the time while we're scrolling on internet or social media we see posts, tweets with different kinds of information that you feel like is increasing your knowledge

But like chances of that info or knowledge being wrong is also high and I remember most of uncles or boomers sharing things like "aliens spotted on earth", whole nation got flooded, bill gate is evil (oh this one's right), US is behind everything bad going in my country etc etc.
Whatever information they consumed on social media, they believed it was all real and that's how politicians started manipulation and got votes by showing whatever info they want to people and keeping rest of social media censored to get votes and stay in the power
The Easy Access to information Can bring Revolution
There's a reason why politicians don't like X or platform that don't censor content anymore
And that's because politicians pr Government isn't able to censor true information and bring manipulative information to get support or votes from the public
Now that people are aware of the lies government is feeding people because they've easy access to information

My country has banned X and it's been a year, only reason behind this was due to people speaking information that government is involved in this corruption, it's army regime etc
So easy access to information or knowledge is like a dagger into government heart because if people are aware of everything, and have knowledge than they're going to be replaced by one of them and that's why when you go to third world country you'll see lots of illiteracy, crisis and suppression.
People make money easily now
Since there's real time information updating every second on internet it is easier to make money
Like tonight Fomc meeting everyone who did wait for fed to announce rate which remains unchanged
People did trading with that quick information and the one who had easy and fasted access to information, made most money only if they interpreted that information correctly.
Easy Access to Knowledge is Making People Lazy?
There's also this side of easy access and it's "people are becoming lazy" like if they want to gain knowledge about something and it doesn't show up instantly with one search on the internet
They'll not go further or too deep because they're simply to lazy
All they know nowadays is "chatgpt, tell me what happened on 1689, Jan 29" and they got the info, read it completely
And moved on, most people don't even care to see if it's correct.
I miss the time where I had to search for a meaning of word in Oxford dictionary and had to look pages and than find exact word to see the meaning
Now it's all Google, ChatGPT this and that, but those who explore and research thoroughly on internet are the real one's who cares to know more.
Wrapping Up...
In the end it's just upto us how we change our life through the easy access to knowledge and information we have nowadays
Some of us spend time learning skill, some make money, some do other research and it all depends on our own priorities so we should set it straight and carefully.

Knowledge is key friend. Adding to that, there is a need to rightly interpret it or it will be of no use. Just as you've said, many just stay on the internet and never realize opportunities.
As for the government, this is no new thing in their list, keeping the citizens deform seems a norm.

While some prefer giving fare to save their 10 minutes. Nothing is bad if you are passionate and your intent is good . Same is the case of knowledge . If it is being seeked , then easy ke difficulty doesn’t matter
