My experiences of getting less value for money paid: bad buys!!!

in Hive Learners2 years ago (edited)

Value to me refers to the satisfaction I derive from a product or process. I hope this post will be relatable to other climes, but as a Nigerian, I will be addressing this content from the Nigerian perspective.

Every trader wants to pay less and have more. Only a few people want to pay more for less, and such people usually do that to encourage the seller or just forgo it despite knowing they could have paid less.

I have heard, read, and seen occasions where a customer was dissatisfied with the service or product received, and beyond verbal aggression, some had proceeded to physical aggression, which often times is a result of frustration from the customer. There is a common saying, "WHAT I ORDERED VERSUS WHAT I GOT" and this ranges from ordering clothes to giving dress samples to fashion designers to replicate, shoes, plaiting hair, bags, etc. The frustrating part is that the seller or service provider will not tell you he or she cannot deliver to your taste.

POST who got less value for the money paid and has had difficulty getting a refund. I would love to say that the problem starts from the moment we sight the object of attraction, which oftentimes is appealing to our eyes. Common is shopping online, where we are unable to feel the value in our hands. Another common occasion where we get less for our money is when we purchase used items, especially electronics or wheels.
On three recent occasions, I have made what I will term "bad buys," involving me buying a Nigerian used car and another, kitchen cabinets, and electrical gadgets.Recently, I read a post by @josediccus in this

In 2021, I shopped for cars on social media and eventually traveled from Ilorin to Ibadan, where I met with an agent and seller to buy a car. I invited a mechanic who I knew in Ibadan (though he had not worked for me much) to help evaluate the car. The mechanic I brought assured me the car was a good buy and needed only a few minor repairs. That was how I paid two million Naira ($2667) for the 2008 Toyota Camry. The summary of that purchase was that I sold it after 5 months for a lesser amount after I got the engine ringed. That was the last straw that broke the camel’s back when it came to buying Nigerian used cars.

Last year, I had to relocate to a new apartment that was closer to my place of work. The new house was much bigger and more spacious. Unfortunately, the house lacked kitchen cabinets and wardrobes. I got a kitchen cabinet quotation of N167,000 ($223); however, due to limited funds, I opted for a relocation sale (those people traveling out of the country and willing to sell off their belongings), which was a combination of marble-top kitchen cabinets, a sink, and an in-built oven and microwave, which I got for N220,000 ($293). The first challenge was having to replace the marble tops that broke in the process of transportation with wooden board at a cost of N50,000 ($67), and I discovered the oven that was not used by the owners was not working. I got a technician to look into it, and despite paying for the repair of the oven board, it still did not work. The four-faced tabletop gas and electrical cookers equally never saw the light of day. Meanwhile, the sellers had already relocated, and I never had the chance of a direct interaction as the transaction was through a third party.

In February 2017, when I had my induction ceremony into the medical field, I requested 50 extra souvenirs in addition to the 100 copies I had distributed. The contractor ended up delivering a terrible front-page jotter that made me refuse the whole thing. It was apparent someone else was given the production job, and all the contractor could do was plead that I accept it that way. I ended up leaving those jotters with the contractor, as the souvenirs were not presentable.

As an individual, when it comes to electronics, mobiles, or wheels, I would prefer new items that I can pick up physically. For service deliveries, I would prefer word-of-mouth testimonies from people I know and trust.

Thank you for reading. I would love to have your comments and contributions.

I had same experience when I bought second hand android phone, I made up my mind never to buy second products again,I always go for new one

It's bad experience, at least the new ones have warranty and would put one's mind at rest

I once bought a phone from one guy on the street sometime ago, I learnt my lesson the hard way and won't do that again.

Chai.... That must be hurtful, it's like throwing away money

That's Nigeria for you, it's just that we aren't helping one another

Yeah, thank you for stopping by

Exactly what happened to me. I also bought a used phone from the repairer and he assured me that it was okay. But it wasn't after all.
Thanks for sharing

Cars are a problem! Even with a good mechanic, the parts aging is very bad. I had a bad experience as well, I paid a low price for a car once, but it had a huge mileage, it didn't last much, and it started to have some very expensive engine problems. So I try a lot to buy cars under 90000 km cars right now to avoid this problem, even if I need to pay a bit more. Nice post =)

You're very correct. Thank you for your comment

Your story is tough lol. But I'm glad you already overcome it. I also had same experience but mine was due to the fact that I'm finding something cheap and got something else lol. But then it will never repeat it self.

Yeah, sometimes cheap comes with extra cost

That is why it is mostly preferable to buy new items than old ones, and there is always a warranty in case of non-external damage.

You're correct. It's a great lesson learned for me

I bought a car, vetra product that made go through similar experience. I vowed never to buy Nigerian used cars unless I know the user closely.

It's better that way. For me, both known owner and unknown owner, so far it's 9ja used, there's most likely something fishy

You are right.
