We are all built differently with unique dislikes, likes, opinions, and perspectives. Each individual is drawn to different things, and that doesn’t make us weird; it makes us unique. All my life, I have been a fan of anime. I love anime and I live for it. Even though many people say anime is for kids, I still love it. It doesn’t make me weird; that’s who I am. It is one of the many things that makes me unique. Our preferences and values define who we are. Music is a great example of this subject. When it comes to music, we have different tastes, different opinions on certain songs, and different opinions on artists. One person can claim that a singer is one of the best in the world, while another might say they are the worst. I’ve heard many people praise Davido, the famous Nigerian singer for being the best in Nigeria, while others claim he doesn’t come close to the position, saying his voice sounds like a frog. Our diversity is not only limited to music, it is the same reason @b0s thinks Messi is the greatest footballer of all time.
There’s no doubt that music affects us differently. A song might evoke strong emotions in people, while it does nothing to others. I am not of a different school of thought that music is food for the soul. The importance of music in our lives cannot be overemphasized. Not only does it inspire and motivate us, but it also has the magical powers to evoke and manipulate emotions. Interestingly, there are different songs for different purposes; there are songs that resonate with you when you are sad, songs that make you happy, and songs that make you lose your demureness and start going freaky. Today’s edition of the Hive learner's weekly prompts asks what our favorite music is. How does listening to your favorite music affect you?
As I mentioned above, as humans, we have different tastes when it comes to music. For many, music is therapeutic. I have friends who tell me that whenever they are sad and are at their lowest, music comes through for them. All they have to do is lock themselves up in a room and play good music. They magically feel better after listening to music. Again, I am not disputing the fact that music is therapeutic, but it just doesn’t work for me. At first, I thought I was broken and needed fixing because out of all my friends, I am probably the only person who doesn’t find music therapeutic. Whenever I am sad, what makes me feel better is sleep, and maybe sometimes, anime, but sleep works better. All I need to do is force myself to sleep, wander off, and let my imagination do its work, and when I wake up, I feel better. I have tried to use music as a form of therapy, but it didn’t work. When the song I chose was done playing (about 3 times), and nothing worked, I turned off my phone and slept.
However, the fact that I don’t find music therapeutic doesn’t mean that it doesn’t affect me in any way. I have realized that I enjoy music better when I’m in a happy mood. To put it better, music adds to my happiness. It makes me happy when I’m already happy. On days when I’m happy and I’m in a hyper mood, I find myself dancing to songs. I find it funny that whenever I am in this mood, I don’t dance to songs I understand. I enjoy dancing to South African Amapianos. There’s something spectacular about the language and rhythm.
I don’t have a favorite music. My taste changes from time to time. If you asked me this question two years ago, I’m pretty sure I’d boldly say anything Juice Wrld. I used to be a big fan of Juice Wrld (I still am), playing his music every day. Man of the Year was always on repeat for hours. Out of the blue, I stopped listening to Juice Wrld songs like I used to. I wouldn’t say I grew out of love for his songs, my taste in music changed. One thing I have noticed about myself is that my taste in things changes from time to time. For example, in 2020, I spent the lockdown reading Greek Myths and books about politics, and all of a sudden, my taste drifted to another genre. Similarly, my taste in music shifts from time to time. Recently, I have been enjoying Nigerian hip-hop songs.
My favorite song at the time is “Joy is Coming” by Fido, a Nigerian singer. This song has been on repeat for about 2 days now. I know I’ll get tired of it in a matter of time, but for now, it is my favorite.

Hey darling, you have said it all. Music can be many things to different people and that’s totally fine. What matters is that at different point, we all agree that music like Mohbad said, doesn’t need permission to get to you.
Like you, music doesn’t always make me feel better when I’m feeling down, it only works better when I’m happy except I hear someone sings live and the person is good.
And yes, having a favorite of anything is hard except we are not growing. Change is one thing that is constant but what matters is that, for the time we had something we like, when we start liking something else shouldn’t change the fact that we actually genuinely liked the former. For me, it only means that the circle has grown. 😊

Thank you. 😊
Hey there, Hopey. Mohbad was a great singer. He was lyrically good. During my Jupeb days, my friend was obsessed with his songs. I also agree with him, Hope. Music doesn't need permission to enter your spirit (to get to you). It just happens and that is the beauty of it.
Oh wow! I actually did not know this part about you. I used to think otherwise; that when you are down, music makes you feel better. I know better now.
Change is a part of human beings. Just because I don’t have a favorite music doesn't mean I don’t know the value of music. Of course, I do.
Thank you so much for your beautiful comment.
Yeah, I enjoyed his songs too but I never knew he was the artist until he died. 🥲
Yes, love. Music does not always make my mood better, sleeping does that better.
Yeah, having favorites of things for me, it just limits how much you can see and even enjoy.
It’s my pleasure stopping by. 🌹🤭
In truth everyone have their preference when it comes to music and it's what determine how engrossed we're when listening to it.
I've heard the song Joy is coming by Fido in several occasions on the social media space but never played it myself, I guess now is the time to do so.
Hey there, sir Vick. You are right sir, we all have our preferences when it comes to music.
You should really listen to Joy is Coming. It is a great song.
Thanks for stopping by, sir.
The way you still infused football banter into this post about music has to be studied😂😂. Great post.
Hehe. Very important.😂
Joy Is Coming is indeed a good song. I have also being listening to it for days now. And as you said, my own favourite music also changes over time.
Fido is a great singer. Although I haven't listened to any other song except this one, I hope to do so soon.
Thanks for stopping by.
Thank you.
I agree with you, music is therapy for the soul. When you talk about music making you happy, it's impossible not to remember "happy" , it's a song that motivates just by remembering it. I'm going to research those songs you left to listen to later.
The reason I think Messi is the best is cause I have eyes 😁.
As for music taste, you're right, it is dynamic. At least for most people I know.
Interestingly, I tend to be very different, when I really like something, my taste doesn't change.
Joy is coming has been on repeat on my sister's phone since morning, and her dance steps to the song is even more interesting to watch.
Music is part of our lives and conveys very important messages to us.
