Open Access, Safe Access: Balancing Internet Freedom With Responsible Governance

in Hive Learners7 days ago

Over the past decades, technology has provided humans with many opportunities, making life easier, better, and worth living. Technology has provided spaces in different aspects where humans can venture into wherever they fit in and become the best versions of themselves. The internet is a very good example of how technology has opened doors for humans. While some people see it as a tool to chat with friends, battle boredom, or simply have fun, others see it as an employment opportunity- a source of income. Thanks to the internet, many people have made fortunes, whether through social media apps or other platforms. With this, it is evident that the Internet is an important part of our lives.

As citizens of a country, we are all entitled to fundamental rights. As long as you are a citizen of a country, you are entitled to these rights, regardless of class, gender, or religion. Rights such as; freedom of speech, freedom of religion, right to life, right to education, and so on. Now, should access to the internet be considered a fundamental human right? Meaning, every citizen of a country should be entitled to the internet, and stopping another human from accessing the internet should be considered a violation. In my opinion, access to the internet should be a fundamental human right. However, there should be restrictions to prevent citizens from going overboard. One thing about humans is that once they are given access to certain things, there are tendencies for them to misuse them. To prevent and curtail these tendencies, it is important to enforce some restrictions.

Access to the internet should be considered a fundamental human right because it serves as a vital source of employment and economic opportunities for millions of people worldwide. Every citizen of a country, regardless of their status, age, gender, or religion, should have equal internet access. This will help them pursue their goals, connect with positive and like-minded individuals, and become the best versions of themselves. Using most African countries as a case study, the economy is in shambles and no one is doing anything about it. Thousands of youths graduate from the university every year, yet they still roam around the country, seeking job opportunities. Thanks to the internet, many of these youths have made a fortune and changed their lives. Making this a fundamental human right is important as it provides employment opportunities for many.

Also, the internet is a platform for people to express their opinions and thoughts about the system of government. Thanks to social media platforms, citizens can share their takes on what they like, and dislike, and what to change about their system of government. During elections, citizens can come online to campaign for their representatives. During the last presidential election in my country, the internet was filled with thousands of tweets, statuses, and political articles. Citizens, particularly the youth, came together to support their representatives. Unfortunately, things didn’t go our way.

Having established that the internet should be a fundamental human right, there should be restrictions to keep citizens in check. As much as citizens have the right to access the internet and share their views about certain topics, there should be restrictions. For instance, citizens should not use the internet to promote hate speech or bullying. If every citizen had free access to the internet, they might want to use it however they like; Bukky other ethnic groups or share hate comments. Citizens who do this should be punished.

Also, Citizens should not share false or misleading information. Sometimes, citizens do this to prank people or gain more likes, followers, or comments. This is one of the restrictions that should be enforced.

In summary, making access to the internet a fundamental human right, which everyone can enjoy regardless of age, status, religion, or gender, will be beneficial to both the individual and the economy at large. However, to prevent citizens from going overboard, restrictions should be put in place.

Hey, love. ❤️
I do agree with you that we have right as humans to the internet but like you’ve rightly pointed out, I also think it is fine to put some restrictions because we know some people can be really wild on the internet.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this with us, love. 🥰

Hey there, Hopey. I'm glad you agree with me. As humans, once we have free access to something- or once we are in a position of authority, there are tendencies to misbehave. This is why it is important to have these restrictions in place.

Thanks for stopping by, love.

That’s true. Although sometimes we see this restrictions as witch hunting but it is for our own good and that of others as well.

It’s my pleasure stopping by, love.

Only “witches and wizards” will see the restrictions as witch-hunting. 😂
Looking forward to your entry.🌹

Talking about internet access for now, of course, I am very much needed in various aspects, although there are a handful of people who look wild on the internet, but people who are wild on the internet can still be followed up not to break the internet network.

People who act wild on the internet should be controlled. People who bully and share hate comments should be punished.

Well, putting some restrictions may not be fisible as such because what you feel is right another may see it as wrong. Freedom of speech is a good thing to be observed in every state as in most cases the government will not be free to do somethings because they know people's eyes is on them

While freedom of speech is important, there are just some things that should be restricted. Are you saying those who share false information shouldn’t be punished?

I love this. I don't in anyway support anyone to stop the use of internet because of their selfish interest. We all know what we gain by using the internet on daily basis.
Thank God for the internet I don't know where I would have been by now financially.
Thanks for sharing

Like you, the internet has also happened me financially.

This is something that can be expanded, because as we know, there are populations that are not included in the computer network. A global effort may be necessary to provide access to the network for these people, including in places where the infrastructure is precarious. Could it be a government service? Perhaps, something minimal. More robust access would be provided by providers. It's a good reflection.

It's not even negotiable to say that access to Internet is out fundamental human rights...we deserve to be informed, we deserve free use of it regardless of how it's being misused... instead placing some important restrictions seems good

Sir fav, you are actually very right, I also agree with you that internet should be for everyone, no violence no human right. The current situation of internet is best I think..

It seems to me a great idea that Internet access is regulated, with rules that prevent their abuse or misuse. But I agree that it would be a genius that was recognized as a human right. I hope I see and enjoy that right as long as I have life.

Having access to the Internet as done is lots of good to bad, just imagine the world without Internet. Alot of gradute will be roaming the street without jobs.

Shutting down someone's internet is wrong and unacceptable.Nowadays, nothing can be done without the internet, so it is essential. However, one more thing to keep in mind is that the youth society should not move towards destruction due to misuse of the internet. We need to educate them about the proper use of the internet and move forward together with everyone. Thank you for presenting your writing in a very beautiful way.
