Rediscovering My Love for Painting with Watercolors

in Hive Learnersyesterday

Hey Everyone!!

After many years, I finally picked up a paintbrush again and indulged in the joy of painting with watercolors. The last time I painted was during my school days, where art was a subject, and I had plenty of opportunities to express my creativity. Today, however, the inspiration came unexpectedly.

A neighbor's young girl approached me for help with her school project. She had to complete five paintings for her viva exam but was short on time. She asked if I could help her color one of her drawings, as she wasn’t confident in her painting skills and was also slow at it. Due to my busy schedule, I agreed to help her with just one painting, and she gladly handed me the drawing along with her watercolors and brushes.

Interestingly, she only had two brushes – a medium one for larger areas and a thin one for detailing. Without a thick brush, I had to make do with the medium brush, which left some visible strokes on the blue background. But I embraced the challenge, enjoying the process.

Since it had been years since I last worked with paints, I had to refresh my memory about color mixing. For the fish, I aimed for a vibrant purple but ended up with a darker shade as I struggled to balance the proportions of red and blue. Instead of redoing it, I decided to go with the deeper purple, which gave the fish a unique look. Similarly, for the sunflower petals, I mixed a hint of red with yellow to achieve an orange tone, adding warmth to the composition. To keep the background subtle, I blended dark blue with white to create a lighter shade.

The final step was outlining the design with black paint – the trickiest part of all! Achieving consistent thickness in the borders required a steady hand and lots of patience. Although I couldn’t make it perfect, the imperfections added a personal touch to the piece.

Painting again brought back childhood memories and reminded me how much I enjoy creative activities like crafting, painting, and coloring. It was a rewarding experience, and I felt a deep sense of satisfaction upon completing the artwork.

I hope you enjoy this glimpse into my painting journey after such a long hiatus. Let me know your thoughts on the finished piece!
