Compulsory medical checkup: Yes, I'm in support

in Hive Learners9 days ago

Hello everyone!

I do not shy away from or lie about the fact that I have not been taking medical checkups very seriously in my life. To be honest, one of the reasons I give it much thought and then shut down the idea of going for a medical checkup is the high cost. The last time I went for a checkup, I was heavily charged, but I could not complain because the cost of living has risen significantly. Besides, it was for my health, and most importantly, my test results came back okay—nothing was wrong with the stomach issue I went to check.

Now, this does not apply only to my lifestyle; it is also one of the major reasons why many people do not go for medical checkups. If, by any chance, we were required to undergo a compulsory medical checkup with the payment integrated into our taxes, it would be a great initiative, and people would embrace it. Why?

It Would Appear Free of Charge

Many of us are already paying taxes without even realizing it, while others are well aware and have factored them into their expenses. With this system in place, people would feel more encouraged to go for medical checkups because it would no longer feel like a direct out-of-pocket expense. Instead of a pay-as-you-go model, it would seem like a free offer. Additionally, knowing that they are paying for it through taxes, many people would not want their money to go to waste.

The truth is, it is not that people are unaware of the benefits of medical checkups—they know. However, the lack of financial resources often hinders them from taking action, just like in my case. That is why making it a mandatory service, with payments collected through taxes, would be a significant step forward.

The Country Would Be a Better Place

If people were educated about the importance of medical checkups and if they were made mandatory, both the country and the world at large would become better places. People would become more conscious of their health, the lifestyles they lead, the food they consume, and many other aspects of their well-being.

Currently, a radio station I listen to very often has partnered with a hospital in the city to offer free medical checkups. You need to see how packed the place is with people. When I saw the photos, I was surprised. It proves that people actually understand the benefits of medical checkups—it is just that the financial burden makes it seem like a big deal, preventing them from going. I must say, once such a rule is established—making medical checkups compulsory for citizens—there would be little to no resistance because, deep down, people recognize its importance.

Am I wrong? Of course, I acknowledge that some people deliberately avoid medical checkups because they fear being diagnosed with a disease. However, I fully support the government if they decide to enforce laws against violators. This is how many people unknowingly spread diseases, simply because they are unaware that they have them—for example, HIV/AIDS.

Thanks for reading.

Compulsory medical checkups are not bad in itself but at what cost. If government wants to make it compulsory, then they should foot the bill from start to finish.

The financial burden is the main reason for the neglect of medical checkups
