My Discouragement in Making New Friends

My hometown is situated in the Midwest of different communities, one unique thing our community is known was its culture and God-given materials such as salt, granite and limestone. This is the village I came from. I am very proud to tell of Akanu.

Back in those days when I was in school,I was the best female dancer in our community, Akanu. Because of my inborn talent,I had a lot of friends thronging into my parents house every hour of the day for rehearsals. Many came for the pure motive of practicing while others are the watchers. That connected me to lots of people and they all were my friends.

Girls who can dance enjoy a lot of benefits. They are more attracted to men, they gain popularity and favor from a lot in the community. Men in the village believed that ladies who can dance would last long in "bed", meaning they have enough energy and flexibility, such mentality, one which make so many of us engage in dancing activity like our life depends on it. I was a very popular girl but approaching a new person or keeping a long lasting relationship could be a tough one for me. I had lots of friends then as a teenage as a dancer and a young school girl.

During a football match between my village and our neighboring village, Ahah, which our village was the host, we had a lot of visitors who came to spectate the match. I was the leader of the dance group who danced at the entrance to the mini stadium in the village square to welcome dignitaries. While dancing,I noticed that one of the dignitaries couldn't turn his face away, he was absorbed. I knew my vibrating backside was his own football pitch.

I decided to focus on him and I intentionally made more beautiful moves which I was sure left him flabbergasted. At the end of the event, I didn't want to rush home, I expected a callback from him. Fortunately for me, this man was a the chairman of the event. He was a very young man from our village, the first doctor from our village. He was a bachelor as introduced by the MC of the event. After Giving out awards, he ended by asking the dance group to come for honorable encouragement. When we came out as he was giving each of a hand shake and gifts he whispered to me to wait for him at the foyer immediately.

I knew I had gotten my prey finally. I went immediately after leaving the stage and stood there waiting for him. I never planned to be late. When he finally arrived, I couldn't look at his face.I was very shy and blushing at the same time even when he had not said anything. He started talking by appreciating the way I danced. I said he has picked interest in me. I was happy but I didn't know what to say, because I wasn't the type to make friends easily with new people and begin conversations.

He asked for my name and I answered and he also told me his name(Adam). I loved Adam for his nature, beauty and wealth too. He visited my parents with his family members and asked for my hand in marriage but my parents told them I have to finish my tertiary studies first. But Adam promised my parents that he will sponsor my schooling till I am ready to marry him. I also agreed to this deal because I wanted him never to view me as a village girl but as an educated lady.

Time ran like an ocean and it was time for me to return to school in the city. Before I left, my dad advised me to watch how I make friends now. He told a story of what a friend of his did to him when he was working in an organization. He had a colleague, his one time friend, they were both eligible to represent the organization in an international conference.

Anyone who represented the organization would stand a chance of promotion. His friend,Cain bribed the Manager of the organization to be the representative instead of giving room for a free and fair election to be carried out. Since that day, my dad hardly related with people and said he had only a few people he called friends.

So he told me that I should be careful of the friends I make as I was leaving that some of mates may want to marry before me, some may want to succeed more than me in academics, some males may want to get close toe for their own selfish interest, my ears were open to my dad's advice. I listened and thought of what my dad told me and decided to only make friends with people I trust and just a few. This decision was the major reason why I didn't make a lot of friends in the tertiary institution couple with I don't make friends easily with new people. I was easy for me to relate with guys than females.

So I decided to live like my dad after his experience. Make a few friends that I can learn from and not those who will only be learning from me or jealous of me when I am better than them and that lifestyle has been helping me. I learnt so much in University even with the fact that I didn't know names of my course mates till we graduated.

Yes, we all should be careful while making friends, we don't who is going to show his real face and backstab us. So, it's better to make less friends.

You dances very well?
How come I've never thought of that?😅
You're not looking like it jooor.

Yes yes, being sociable with that attract a lot of friends

You make great points - shallow, benefit-focused friendships often disappoint. Glad you now have some devoted friends who cherish your bond

You made smart moves to get Adam😂.

Friends can make or mar you, your dad expereinces is enough to know that a friend can push one up or bring one down.
