That was a very sad and touching story, I felt so bad for him. I can only imagine how he must've felt during his last minutes on earth.
That's why it's good to always stand for the truth and if you're not sure just say you're not. No matter the good you do for people, they'd still turn on you, I'm sure some of them knew he was the one that paid the debt but probably didn't care
You're right, some actually knew he paid their debt but they just didn't like him so they still beared false witness against him. Things would have been a little different if those who knew him spake up but they didn't.
