The greater flow of cars also contributes significantly to pollution, and we feel this in the air quality.
Today, I live in a large city with around 600,000 inhabitants. I've got used to the conditions here, but whenever I go to the countryside, to my mother's house, I feel the difference in the air, in the smell of sewage pollution and also in the amount of garbage lying around. Although many people see country dwellers as less “educated” people, it is noticeable that there is often a much stronger awareness of pollution.
But I believe that it's all a question of place and the mentality that the region has, because here in my city there are areas where people are more aware, where the collection of recyclable waste takes place efficiently and helps to reduce the environmental impact. Depending on the neighborhood you're in, it's possible not to find garbage on the ground or people disposing of waste in inappropriate places. However, when I pass through poorer areas, the situation is usually different.
There is regular garbage collection and the city has a sanitary landfill, which has less environmental impact than the old “dumps”. There is also a program to clean up the Paraibuna River, the main river that runs through the city. In general, the city has shortcomings in the fight against pollution, like any other, but I believe that good measures are being taken to alleviate the problem. Even so, I think it's too little. There should be a more intense effort, because even if pollution were drastically reduced, it would still take time for its effects to really be mitigated. And the longer things take to happen, the worse it gets.
Overall, my city is good in this respect. Of course, I can't compare it to the city in the countryside that I usually visit, but in relation to other cities of the same size, I believe it is a good example of what is acceptable. I think it needs a bit more work to raise public awareness and stricter regulations. Whatever the city, state or country, measures need to be taken to reduce pollution and prevent the population from suffering the consequences.
I believe that pollution will always be present in people's lives, even those who live in the countryside. The big issue is that if there isn't joint action, a revolution or effective technological means to solve it, this will be a problem that could attract even more problems. It's up to the government to study the best ways of minimizing the impact of pollution, investing in awareness, regulation and really efficient projects, and the population also needs to do its part; in this scenario, it's impossible for things to be resolved without joint action.

Existe coleta de lixo periódica, e a cidade possui um aterro sanitário, que causa menos impacto ambiental se comparado aos antigos "lixões". Há também um programa de despoluição do Rio Paraibuna, o principal rio que corta a cidade. De forma geral, a cidade tem deficiências no combate à poluição, como qualquer outra, mas acredito que boas medidas são tomadas para amenizar o problema. Ainda assim, acho que é pouco. Deveria haver um esforço mais intenso, pois, mesmo que a poluição fosse drasticamente reduzida, ainda levaria tempo para que seus efeitos fossem realmente amenizados. E quanto mais as coisas demoram para acontecer, pior fica.
No geral, minha cidade é boa nesse aspecto. Claro, não posso compará-la com a cidade do interior que costumo visitar, mas, em relação a outras cidades do mesmo porte, acredito que ela seja um bom exemplo dentro do aceitável. Acho que falta um pouco mais de trabalho na conscientização da população e regulamentos mais rigorosos. Seja qual for a cidade, o estado ou o país, medidas precisam ser tomadas para reduzir a poluição e evitar que a população sofra as consequências.
Acredito que a poluição sempre estará presente na vida das pessoas, até mesmo daquelas que vivem no campo. A grande questão é que, se não houver uma ação conjunta, uma revolução ou meios tecnológicos eficazes para resolver isso, esse será um problema que poderá atrair ainda mais problemas. Cabe ao governo estudar as melhores formas de minimizar o impacto da poluição, investindo em conscientização, regulamentação e projetos realmente eficientes e também a população precisa fazer sua parte, nesse cenário, é impossível que as coisas seja resolvidas sem uma ação conjunta.
