Internet Access Is Our Right, Let's Have It.

Fundamental human rights is a big issue now. There are lots of breaches to rights and this discussion is going to bother on this issue seriously. Let me begin by saying that human rights are individual privileges that are entrenched in the constitution of a nation.

Over the years, there have been tremendous records of abuses of human rights. Funny enough, the class of people who made the law are the key abusers of the law. Oh! I did not mention that human rights are law. They are indeed law.

One reason why fundamental human rights are laws is that they are stipulated in the constitution of any nation that is a member of the United Nations. Hence, whatever clause you can find in the constitution of a nation can be referred to as law.
The Constitution itself is a body of rules that guides the conduct of a people and how the state is administered.

One of the fundamental human rights is what we shall concentrate on today, the right to Freedom of information. All rights are important and must be respected.
Social media is arguably one of the sources of information.

Freedom of Information Right

Few years ago, the government of nations, I mean the legislative arm of government, had a hot debate to deal with. Journalists across the borders have indicted a few cabal of hiding very important information from the people which could be detrimental for the populace to know how they have been governed.

In the end, the journalist won the debate as everyone now has the right to seek and to get information that pertains to some issues. We all know that the government keeps some information classified, in the end, nothing is hidden forever.

Recently, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, requested that the files pertaining to the murder of a president of the USA be released to the public domain. J.F Kennedy was murdered several years ago and the investigation seems unending, to make the finding so far reach everyone who cares to know, Trump had to do the needful.

Violations of Human Rights

One of the problems that the masses have witnessed against the government in recent times and over the years is the violation against their rights.

For example, we all know that there are limitations to human rights which are entrenched in the constitution but in some cases, the government through her agency usually broke the laws. A man who is arrested and put in custody of the police without evidence (s) has been robbed of his right to freedom of movement and association.

The government in this regard is by law supposed to pay damages for incarcerating someone who is not found guilty by a law court and justly kept in a police cell or prison.

Access to the internet means that people can explore the opportunity to spread information, or to share information or to fetch information. If the government does not want the masses to have access to the internet, then the government ought to go back to the basis and be dismembered from the United Nations, meaning that the constitution of the nation will remove that aspect of right.

The internet is available for many reasons which poses an advantage for research. Hence, a sincere government should not have a problem letting the masses have access to it except that the government is not popular or hiding certain things from the people.

Effects of Human Rights Violations

When human rights are violated, it could lead to anarchy. A system where people want to willfully break the law and undermine the processes of governance. This was exactly what happened when Twitter (Now X) was banned for Nigerians by the Buhari led government through its minister for Communication, Lai Muhammed, people had to resort to other means to get through the app to continue their engagement.

A popular government could become very unpopular and the central government could be termed a dictatorship.

Accountability is one of the greatest features of a government. When human rights like access to internment are violated, then that government has lost its trust.

A lot of people make their daily living through the internet. When the access to the internet is removed, a lot of people, especially you and I who are using the internet may not have the opportunity anymore.
