On the 14th day of June, 2023 (two days ago), I joined in for the fourth session of the currently ongoing Global Youth Climate Training.
The Global Youth Climate Training is facilitated by the Global Youth Coalition (GYC) - a newly founded global network of climate youth activists working to empower more people (especially youths) to take action on climate change for the purpose of achieving a more sustainable future.
Also collaborating to make this training a success are the University of Oxford's van Houten Fund, The Smith School Enterprise of the Environment - University of Oxford, and Oxford Net Zero
The training is scheduled to hold fortnightly for a duration of 13 weeks (between 3rd May and 30th October, 2023).
Now, one may wonder, why invest so much time and resources to ensure the success of this 13-week training and what can be achieved from taking part in this training?
First, from highly threatened food production systems (which is majorly as a result of drastic change in weather patterns), extreme droughts, loss of lives and livelihoods, to rising sea levels that greatly increase the risk of catastrophic flooding, and everything in between, the impacts of climate change are universal in scope, unmatched in scale and drastic actions must be taken in light of mitigating these harsh outcomes.
Secondly, although the climate change issue has become quite a mantra on the lips of millions around the world, only a few actually have accurate up-to-date information and can take requisite action pertaining to the global challenge.
Furthermore, through the deployment of various numerical climatic models, it is expected of the global average temperature to warm at least twice as much in the next 100 years as it has during the last hundred years (more especially after the industrial revolution)
Also, the training serves as a platform where like-minded youths (and the aged alike) network, ideate, innovate and take viable steps in a bid to combat this highly threatening environmental mishap.
These, amongst others, are the reasons why this training has been organized and it is hoped that after the completion of this training, a more environmentally aware crop of individuals who would champion the global warming/climate change cause must have been armed with one of the most important tools needed to win this climate battle - knowledge.
