Strange indeed, it's very common here o, back then I use to work as waiters in parties and this kind of thing happens regularly, they'll just call you over before you start serving the guests and squeeze some money into your hands, so you'll keep bringing more and more food to their table.
I will take the money and not mind them. Some people are too selfish.
