How Forgetfulness Shaped My Approach to Responsibility

in Hive Learners5 days ago

Being forgetful is inevitable for humans; it's just that the level of our forgetfulness varies from one individual to another. Sometimes, we find out that a vital piece of information has slipped our mind, and by the time we recall it, it could be too late and quite annoying. Most times, being forgetful comes with a price, and often an uncomfortable one, just like I experienced some time ago.

You know, I used to think if human minds used to shut down sometimes just like a computer system, causing humans to be forgetful, hehehe. This is because everyone forgets things, both the young and adults. Although some persons are extremely forgetful to the point that you can't discuss an important issue with them the previous day, and they act accordingly without forgetting most of the discussion the next day. I am also a victim of forgetfulness, but at least not to such an extent. However, I will tell you about one time I forgot something important and it ended up ruining the day for me.

While I worked as an admin assistant and secretary in one of the private oil and gas firms here in Lagos State, I experienced an unforgettable day in my life when being forgetful cost me a lot. My boss usually has private projects in different states, but whenever he has a project here in Lagos, we do go together for the presentation and trainings. Each time, he has an outside job, let's say Abuja, I am always on duty organizing documents upon documents, doing a lot of printouts, and even on the day he is delivering the project, I do work remotely for him, making sure that every single needed document is attended to.

It becomes a different thing when I am to go with him; I ensure I have everything at hand. I have been diligently doing so until one day, due to pressure in the office prior to heading down to Victoria Island here in lagos for the project, I totally forgot to do the needful. Some documents I scanned, I left inside the scanner and didn't bother to cross-check my file before joining my boss in the vehicle.
Getting to Victoria Island was a bit behind schedule, but we immediately set up the projector to begin as the people were seated and waiting for my boss with other engineers.

Halfway through the project delivery, my boss requested the original copy of the scanned document, and I humbly dipped my hand inside my file to pick it out, but nothing was seen. I felt I was dreaming because how could I forget such an important document, which my boss reminded me to pack everything? He was waiting to receive this document from me; the people were looking at me as well. I felt like disappearing because I didn't know the lie I could tell or open my mouth and explain how incompetent I am at that point. It was obvious that I didn't come with the document.

My boss quietly asked me to follow him outside, and there, he instructed me to take a taxi to and fro back to the office to pick up the documents and bring them to him immediately while he continues with other aspects of the project pending when I return.

Fortunately, there wasn't a traffic jam that hot afternoon, and it made the movement faster, but it cost me my money and stress because my boss made me pay for the taxi myself. As if the embarrassment wasn't enough, my boss cut my salary down to 50% that month for messing up with my job. To him, he said I need to feel the impact of my forgetfulness so it can serve as a reminder for me to sit up when next I have an important assignment.

Ever since then, I learned to cross-check and double-check my files or bag whenever I am stepping out for any assignment or event and not necessarily only job-related matters. Using digital reminders and daily planning has also been a way I cope with being forgetful. Truth be told, I have had similar issues with hospital trips, forgetting one thing or the other, which made my doctor reschedule an appointment for me, attracting extra funds and wasting time and delaying treatment.

Your boss deducted 50% salary only. If I were your boss you might be fired in the next month🤣. Just kidding.
Whatever, I think it was a lesson for you and you will remember it all the time.

The deduction was a whole lot of torture ... firing me will be too harsh.. hehehe 😃

And yea .I learned a good lesson

50% was too harsh! Jesus! How much did you make for him to give your salary a 50% haircut and expect you to be fine?! Glad we're speaking about it in the past tense.

Omo..some people are overly too strict. Different personalities but it's fine
Now in the past

I totally can relate with you on this, sometimes i feel the need to go for a medical checkup but all the same we will get over this soonest and stop being forgetful.

It's not something of medical check up I think unless it's a chronic situation
