The Teacher’s Fault?

in Hive Learnersyesterday

A lot of time, parents and guardians blame the teachers over the poor performance of their ward. Perhaps because they paid the school fees with their hard-earned money, and so all they want is magic in the ends of the teachers, but then, it doesn't work that way to the best of my knowledge, at least as a parent who has kids in school and also as someone who has been in school settings and worked as a teacher.

A session with my son's teacher and me

The performance of a student is dependent on several factors, such as the student's interest and effort in learning, parents involvement in their children's academic activities, and the teacher's dedication too. How well is the teacher impacting knowledge in the lives of the learners? What kind of teaching method is used matters because, obviously, every child is different and learn at a different pace. If a teacher uses one teaching method that doesn't work for all the learners in the classroom, obviously some of the learners might be lagging behind, leading to poor performance.

The other day, I was discussing with a friend why passion matters in the teaching professions. A teacher who has passion for his or her job and not only after the salary at the end of the month, would devise different means to ensure that the students are carried along, even if it means applying repeatitive learning methods to some students whose assimilation levels are poor. Another factor that could give a good performance to the part of the learners is that if the school often hosts training for teachers, it will go a long way in seeing a desirable result. That's by the way about the factor that can influence students's performance from the part of the teachers, and of course, which is their crucial role, of which I am sure that most teachers with passion towards their job do that diligently.

...Now let's talk about the parents and students factors to be considered.

You will agree with me that while some students don't show interest in their academics or put in effort that should bring a positive result, some of their parents don't care. Some parents just pay school fees, and that's all! Like seriously? Parents have a crucial role to play too in order to ensure a good academic performance. Your child shows no interest and effort; while the teacher does his or her part, parents stay in the background doing the needful too. When a child returns from school, get him to do his homework, go through his or her notes, and be sure they are up to date. Create a quiet environment and encourage the child to study his books always. These little tasks can do a lot of magic in the lives of the students at home, and when it's combined with the teacher's effort, a good result will be seen for sure, if not excellent but at least a satisfactory result.

Personally, I do not joke with getting involved in my kids academic activities. From term to term, year to year, I make sure to establish parent-teacher relationships. Once I detect anything I don't cherish in my child's academic progress, I draw the attention of the teachers, and we brainstorm on how to get it fixed.

If there's one thing most of the teachers who have taught my children in different classes like about me as a parent, then that would be my active involvement always in my kids academic progress. You don't leave the whole workload on the heads of the teachers and expect magic. Parents and guardians have sensitive roles to play as well.

Wrapping up, while teachers play vital roles in molding the leaders of tomorrow, it requires a collaborative effort of both the student, the parents, and the teacher to bring about a good academic performance. So overall, it's never the teacher's fault if the child performs poorly, especially for a child who doesn't show interest in learning or make effort, and also for the parents of such students who don't find the need to get involved in their child's academic progress but let the whole workload be in the hands of the teacher.

Personally, I believe the teacher plays about 40% role in the students academics and I don’t think any teacher would wish for his students to fail.

Most of the work lies with the parents and the students. If a child goes to school and comes home to sleep without revising, how would all the teachers effort show at the end of the day?

Exactly my dear....I really don't see the need to blame teachers except for those teachers who doesn't do their work

Seriously ehn.. there is nothing more beautiful than a teacher who loves the job. They're always patient and ready to impart knowledge. No matter how much the students might bring them back, they would always be ready to take the time to carry them along. I've had such teachers in my life, even lecturers as well. God bless them all!😍

That's why passion matters in any profession one finds him or herself doing.
Thanks for visiting, Bruno

Even as the factors link to parents and students, the teachers have a bigger portion of the blame. The nonchalant attitude in most teachers are alarming. I have seen a lot

Yes..the non challant teachers are not overlooked, however students and parents are not exempted too

Your activity in your children's academics is a good one and I admire it because your collaboration with their teachers will definitely help them with their studies.

Teachers can have their fault but parents have a role to play as well.

Of course teachers have their own fault but with parents involvement and students effort, good result must be achieved

I share exact view of yours as things should be looked at holistically as many actors are involved in this scenario.

Thanks for sharing this insightful write-up with us.

Sometimes teachers can be responsible for failure but I think most of the time it depends on students effort.

That is the problem with most Nigerian parents. They think teachers are magician to make the magic happen on their kids because they are paying a huge school fees. No, even the parents have a role to play too.
Just like you have said, parents should be actively involved in their children's academics, in this way, they notice what is right and not right.

For teachers, they need more trainings to do their best because everyone need to be updated with the current learning.
