The rise of social media has proven to have a lot of impact to the life of many users. Though many people see just the negative aspect of it, addiction to social media, social media has a lot of positive impact when properly used in a disciplined manner.
I have never thought of it before, but including social media to the academic curriculum in schools will be very helpful in quite a number of ways.
These days, the rate of social media addiction is actually on the high side. Somebody may be wanting to do something, but due to a message from facebook, whatsapp or any other social app, they will totally forget about what they wanted to do, and start chatting or watching reels.
I remember when I was still a primary and secondary school student, the use of phones during school hours was prohibited majorly because of the intense distractions they cause to the students. That time, if you are caught with a phone, the punishment is very intense. However, even though there was a law against bringing phones to school, we still found one way or the other to bring in our phones.
Now that i think of it, we feel really good when we sneak a phone inside the school unnoticed. I guess its probably because of the fact that we were breaking the school's law. I guess. The phone end up distracting us from classes because all our mind will be - let break time come so that we can go press the phone in secret.
Now that i have thought about it, what if social media was included in our curriculum and we didn't have to sneak out to chat on 2go, facebook and watch funny skits? would there be as much distractions from studies as there was? Welp, i guess not.
Apart from family, another place that understands an individual to a good extent is the school. The teachers know the character of each and every one of their pupil, thus, helping them properly navigate the path of social media will not be as difficult as it may seem.
If social media is integrated in the academic curriculum, i think it will actually do more good than harm.
We all know that schools do not actually teach people how to face real life situations. They don't teach how to make money, save up and start a business, and how to solve problems when you have one.
However, with the integration of social media to the academic curriculum, schools will be able to teach students how to handle social media bullies, how to behave orderly online without using curse words, and ultimately, how to have fun and make money from social media.
It will also teach people what how to post properly and avoid posting contents that are bad which may affect other people in a bad way.
There are many times when i will be scrolling through reels and see something that makes me really uncomfortable. These people post these things just to get views, and they care less about any other thing.
Bringing social media as a course will actually help a lot to reduce many things that are going wrong.
