THE JOY OF VOLUNTEERING

in Hive Learners9 days ago (edited)

With the nature of how things are in the country, we don't get to see many people volunteering often, but then, even in the darkest times, there is still that one person that will always stand out.

I remember when I stopped volunteering for things because when I do, people tend to take advantage of it, and make me do more work than I signed up for, but then, when I thought of it, we live in a world where people will want to take advantage of literally anybody in any situation. It is left for a given individual to decide to not allow other people take advantage of their goodness.

The current life I lead is one filled with volunteering services. In other to fully understand the concept of humanitarianism and volunteerism, I went ahead to pay a sum to study humanitarianism as a profession under the institute of humanitarianism and volunteerism and I was certified.

This is to show the extent that I am willing to go to, in other to have a profound knowledge and understanding of the concept of humanitarianism and volunteerism.

Thus far, my knowledge and skills are actively put to the test as I carefreely practicalize this profession in a local setting and a professionalized setting as well, without the hassles of thinking of - how much goes into my pocket.

Though being a humanitarian comes with its negativities as mentioned earlier, it is to you, the humanitarian, to set your limits and be sure to not cross those limits. Don't allow nobody take advantage of you just because you agreed to be a volunteer.

In a community setting, the last time I put my volunteering skills to the test is currently.

My neighbor who is an engineer is not actually well, and has been sick for the past few weeks. I can't recall when it started, but it's been a long time. The huge man has slimmed down to the extent, the flesh covering his clavicle bone has disappeared. His bones are now visible.

He's been going from one doctor to another but they diagnose another thing instead of the real deal. Nobody is willing to take care of him, not even the people he call his friends.

He told me about his problems and he told me every step he took. After paying attention to his words, I suggested that he goes to Federal medical center umuahia and see a doctor as an out patient which he did.

Diverse examinations and tests was carried out, and it was discovered that, the bacteria in his lungs is resistant to a lot of medications. Explains why all the medications he took had no effect.

I noticed he was skeptical to buy the medication due to the high price, and he needed to pay a nurse to administer the medications, but he had little money with him, which was the reason he refused to receive treatment in the hospital.

I volunteered to administer the medications and take care of him at home without the need of paying me. All he needed to do was buy the medication.

He was very happy and we started treatment. 3 days after the medication commenced, I can see a lot of progress. At the moment, it's remaining 2 doses for him to finish the medication.

One thing I learnt from this situation is that, friends can disappoint at any time. He who has hopes in his friends without a plan B, is most likely doomed to fail.

Another time I volunteered was during a free medical outreach

During December last year, the hospital which I work with was organizing a free medical outreach but not many nurses volunteered for the outreach.

My hands were really filled with tight schedule, but still, I had to remove some things from my schedule so as to join the outreach.

I had no monetary expectations, but after the outreach, I didn't just put smiles in the faces of people,I was also blessed by their words.

Their kind words made me really happy, and I was tempted to volunteer more.

I don't actually "plan" the next time that I will volunteer because I always find myself in a situation where I have to volunteer.

There are lots of stories I will love to share, but then, a long post will make it a boring read for you. I wouldn't want you to dose off to sleep as you read m post, so, I will have to draw the curtains here.

Thank you for stopping by.

Wow!! God will reward you richly for the help you rendered to him. I don't think there is any definition we can give to love than this. Someone you are not related to yet you took it upon yourself to take care of him. This is something even some family members won't do.

You are right about the part of people taking advantage of the goodness, it happens, that is why we must also know our limit and also act with wisdom.

Some people tend to take advantage of your kind heart because you volunteer to assist them in something, automatically you have become their maid. But we won't stop help because of few bad eggs
