You made me think a lot about this. You are very right that total free will does not exist because we live in society and depend on each other to progress. Our actions have consequences, your student's example is perfect to understand it. I think the important thing is to be faithful to our values and beliefs, that is what allows us to sleep with a clear conscience and to feel good about what we have done.
