An Abuse of Power

in Hive Learnersyesterday

If there's something we don't talk a lot about these days, it's how the owners of small businesses (and maybe big businesses) abuse their powers.

Earlier today I was talking to a friend who began to tell me about another lady friend of ours who recently got suspended from her place of work by her boss, simply because earlier that morning, he had instructed her to help him buy food whenever the food lady came around and she had forgotten.

So he had decided to suspend her for a month at first, before eventually bringing it down to two days. When I heard about the whole thing, I had laughed at first because it sounded funny to me and that is because I know that she isn't his personal assistant, as a matter of fact her job has nothing to do with assisting him to buy food and she doing that would be her doing him a favour, and yet he felt he had to punish her for it.

Reminds me of the time I was an apprentice for this father of two little kids who was a professional barber. During my time there, this man had turned me into his personal maid. He literally would ask me to do everything for him, his kids and sometimes his wife.

He would ask me to go to his home, help his wife to fetch water while she sits somewhere doing God knows what. They were other horrendous stuff that he made me do, things I wouldn't like to say out here, but I did all of that in good faith while focusing on my main reason of being there, which was to learn how to cut hair.

I honestly don't remember if I had complained to my parents about it at the time... I don't think I did, I think I felt complaining to them would only make matters worse because my boss could end up hating me and that would have made my entire time there a lot harder for me. So I had swallowed it all up and just obeyed like a good boy.

Thinking about it now, it feels so crazy, especially my friend getting suspended. I guess at the end of the day, these people see themselves as god and feel they can do whatever they want because they're the ones in charge..an assumption that isn't entirely wrong because it's either you quit or you suck it up and just do what you're told.
