Safety 101

A while back, I had made a post talking about a guy who never tells anyone about his whereabout, not even his roommate...everytime he just gets up and leave.

I had tried talking to him on multiple occasions, telling him about how risky it is, especially in a country like this where you literally could get kidnapped either by the bad guys or the police. But each time I mentioned it to him, he would laugh it off and continue to do the same thing.

Anyways, about a week ago, I had given him some money that he had promised to pay a week later, which was suppose to be this Saturday. But as usual, he had gotten up early Friday morning, a day to our agreed date for him to repay me and left.

When I heard that he may have traveled that friday, I didn't say anything because like I said, Saturday was our agreed date for me to get paid. Well it got to Saturday and I didn't hear from him, I had waited until later in the evening before giving him a call.

When I called, it turned out his phone was switched off which was odd, due to the fact that his phone is never off, but then I decided to give him the benefit of doubt and waited until later that night to call him again.

When his number was still switched off, my mind began to go to different places, I began to think that maybe he was avoiding me and had decided to turn off his phone on purpose...but then this wasn't exactly the first time I was lending him money and he had always paid on time.

Well it got to Sunday and his number was still switched off in the morning, so I had waited till noon to try it again and surprisingly, it rang this time. It rang for a while but after no one answered, I decided to try again only for the phone to be turned off.

After that, it became clear to me that he was avoiding my call, so I had angrily sent him a text, telling him how disappointed I was at the fact that he had to go through that length to avoid paying me back my money when he could have just walked up to me and spoken to me like a friend, explaining to me that he won't be able to pay at the agreed time.

The moment I sent that text, I made up my mind not to call him again only for me to get a text from a strange number about an hour later. It turned out that on his way out that Friday, he had been arrested by the police in Abia state, a state he had no business being in, especially due to the fact that I found out later that he had told his roommate that he was traveling down to his village which was located in Imo state, the same state that we both school in and is miles away from where he was arrested.

The police had seized his phone but had eventually allowed him to use someone else's phone to contact anyone that could come bail him out, so he had texted me instead. In that text, he had included the number of his elder brother in it, asking me to call him in order for him to travel down there to bail him tomorrow.

When I read the text and immediately contacted his roommate, his roommate had gotten upset at the fact that he had lied to him about where he was going to and said that this was going to serve as a lesson to him.

Hopefully his brother travels down there tomorrow and he gets released..if not, he will be spending another night in jail.

I just hope that he will come out from prison as soon as possible. I feel at least he should inform someone where he was going. Accident can occur any time this incident is just an example. I hope he will learn lesson from this incident.
