Quite a lot of people live a different life online: you'd be shocked to see them real life. It is very possible to live a totally different life online as long as the real identity isn't known. People tend to believe what they see online too, so they accept, conclude and form a base of their opinion concerning others from what is seem online.
An organization requiring its workers of their social media handles should better have a strong reason as to why it is requesting for it. If the reason is to know the kind of person the workers are online, is it still not enough to ask. I believe social media is part of a person's live that should be kept private or public by choice of the owners. If an organization would want to know its worker's kind of life online then it should have been done before employment, probably during the interview where certain informations can be asked for from the interviewee.
Requesting for employees social handle for the sake of saving the company's name and reputation is a lame one. Though, I understand how important it is to safe and maintain a good reputation online and offline but it is more like invading the privacy of the employees. One the other hand, someone like me would have no worry if I were asked to submit my social handles, they only want to know the kind of person I am online and if I would be fit for their job, also, I don't have anything to have anything to hide or that would disqualify me from getting the job.
This prompt is also a call to those who uses social media in a way that if their identity is revealed, they wouldn't be able to stand the consequences of their engagements on the social world. Some users have no business online but just to hate and drag those who seem to be trying their best out there. Some people will loose a lot if their comments on social media could be traced on all platforms, not just on X. Certain people take joy being the one to say something off, make someone or someone's effort seem less than usual. You could tell a lot about them just from how they engage on the internet, some will become the source of malice, hates in an organization if they ever get employed.
The internet never forgets, a very true statement: it doesn't rather it keeps record and could be pulled out like a file any time any day. There are times on the net, especially X, where someone didn't get a job or gig because of what they had said months or even years back. For example, a guy applied for a job online to an organization that is about children rights and care. The company did their own research on his account and retweeted under his application tweet where he posted content of children having sex. He lost the job and couldn't even say anything. Make use of the internet wisely, think about the future: will your account speak for you or against you years to come when you become that kind of person you're aspiring to be.
For those working from home and online, also those who are aspiring to acquire an online skill, your social media usage matters a lot because that's one major path to build a good reputation, get known and get gigs and recommendations. You can't be into every trending drags and cloats. The world is going more digital, so it make some sense if others opinion about you is based on what they see daily on your social media accounts.
During the campaigning for the last gubernatorial election in Lagos, the LP candidate's tweets where he rubbished Yoruba land were unveiled. It's safe to say he lost a lot because of that. How does one wishes to rule a group of people he never respects?
Like it's always said, the internet never forgets.
That is exactly how the internet pulls out a person record, the record could be of benefit or against.
Thank you for stopping by to engage.
Wow, I like the way you put, yes, if any organization will want to know the social media life their employee it should be done before employment.
This will help allot so one will know what he or she has at hand.
Right, it is better to ask before employment. Thank you for your contribution Flamethrow.
I have always be amazed when I see people do something shameful or despiteful on a platform that make memories of everything you do. Some does these things thinking as long as it is going to pay me forgetting it repercussions later in future.
That's why its always best to consider the future even in the present. Actions today will have effect on tomorrow.
Thank you for stopping by.
