We have technology to thank for the development of a means to have a child for people who are unable to conceive naturally due to one condition or another. Surrogacy has put smiles on many people's faces and has lightened up their world with beautiful children to call their own, but as good as it is, there are pros and cons attached to it which sometimes discouraged some from taking surrogacy as an option. In surrogacy, some patients use their egg, which makes them biologically related to the child, while some carry an embryo created through IVF, which means they aren't biologically related. Either way, the good news is the end result, which is a child to show for the efforts put into having a child.
The pros of surrogacy is that it allows people who cannot conceive to have children of their own. Due to the advancement in medical technology, the process is presumed to be safer and easier, and in this generation, we have those who are willing to be surrogates for those in need of their service. As good as surrogacy is, it had its cons also, which might make some not willing to take the risk. Some consider it to be unethical because some see it as an opportunity to exploit financially vulnerable women, especially in a country where compensation is involved, and I have seen a practical example.
Sometimes, those involved changed plans and agreements, leading to the involvement of law enforcement in the custody of the child. Last year, my stylist took on the role of a surrogate for a couple, and they agreed to pay her the sum of three million naira. According to her report, she was given a sum of five hundred thousand naira for the antenatal expenses and other medical needs. Along the line, a family member of the couple started pestering her and demanded the couple not give her the remaining balance, as it was presumed to be too exorbitant for her. Fortunately yesterday, she gave birth to a bouncing baby boy, and she said she won't be releasing the child to them, and these are people with no legal proof of their agreement. No legal paperwork carrying both parties signatures or a pointer to their agreement. I am waiting to see where the case will end.
As for me, surrogacy is not something I will do, except if it will require me carrying my egg myself, which will give me a blood relation to the child, but having another person carry my child is not something I will do. I've heard and seen different dramas arising between the couple and the surrogate. It's definitely not the stress I would love to go through. In my opinion, I don't think surrogacy should be abandoned for other traditional methods of childbearing because there are some people who prefer this method and are willing to go for it. It works perfectly well for some and ended well just as agreed, but to some it is a thorn in their flesh, especially when it becomes a means of extortion.
Opting for surrogacy isn't a bad idea, but before adopting this option, there should be a proper agreement between the intended couple and the surrogates, if possible, backed up by law, put in writing with an appropriate signature with a penalty for whoever goes against the agreement in the long run. This will at least put people's minds at rest when going for this option of childbearing; there won't be any cause for alarm, and at the end, both parties will get what they deserve.

Surrogacy is complex and needs to be done well, because of the issues you mentioned in your story, where the pregnant woman was paid a sum to pay for the pregnancy procedures, but in the end she didn't want to give up her child. It's really complicated for all parties when this happens
I'm just waiting to see how it unfolds, I already advised her to let the child go, it's not her child cos the egg isn't hers
