Staying Relevant in the Face of rapid Technological advancements

"They say that those who do not adapt to changing circumstances soon become relics of the past."

In the current world of rapid technological advancements, it becomes worrisome when you can't predict when it is coming for you and your source of living.

For the purpose of this prompt, we will be looking at the courses already affected, but, rather than saying these courses are no longer needed again, I will rather say "the demand has reduced."
This becomes a problem because the influx is greater than the efflux.. by this I mean that the number of graduates from these various disciplines outweigh the job opportunities where these people can fit in and make a decent living.

However, these disciplines' relevance actually varies from state to state and from country to country, in my country, Nigeria, almost all the disciplines could be said to be suffering from this except professional courses, but, when you get to a country with a good marked out division of labour where everyone knows what he or she should do, it becomes easier and accomodating even in the face of rapid technological advancements.

Some of these courses I feel their demand has reduced in the face of these rapid technological includes:

  • Secretarial studies and office management:

I recently got to know such a discipline existed in college of education because I haven't heard of them throughout my stay in the university.
When my friend told me that was where his sister was admitted into, the first question I asked him was, "where will she work after graduating?"
It came out spontaneously even without thinking it through for long because I just couldn't fit them anywhere as an office could be managed by someone perfectly well even without attaining a formal education.
He jokingly replied me, "she's a girl, she just needs to get certificate"

  • Library and information science:

The world is getting all digitalised and so also is Library.
In the 80's and 90's, this was a hot cake as everyone literally accessed the library to get information but in our world of today, we have the library in our devices and cam access it from anywhere in the world leading to a declining need for librarians.

  • Mass communication:

This is quite a good discipline but technological advancements are taking toll on them too.
A lot of persons now prefer staying in the comfort of their house and reading news online with their gadgets reducing the need to always turn on the radio or television at a particular point just not to miss a broadcast.

Have you thought about the persons who print and sell newspapers too?
How many persons still buy newspapers?
All these and many more are the various ways technological advancements are affecting our professional needs.

Staying relevant in this age involves going for the indispensable and upskilling where need be.

I agree with your view on these courses and I hope those affected are finding suitable alternatives as schooling is a leverage to those who can be open to learning especially new/relevant things and maximise it.

Thanks for sharing this with us.

Yeah, a marked out division of labour helps for sure, but when you consider Africa right now, people are doing whatever they can get not because we lack an organized labour, but because the system has become so hard that that’s the only way to survive. That’s exactly why even when some Africans go to more developed countries, they work menial jobs not because they’re not qualified, but because those jobs are what is accessible to them.

The newspaper question struck me as very interesting. I really haven’t seen a newspaper seller in such a long time.
