Egusi Soup: My Surprising Culinary Talent || How I Made Delicious Egusi Soup on a Budget

in Hive Learners2 years ago (edited)

I always do not seem like someone who would do well in the kitchen or slightly know how to cook. When I say I can cook, many people do not always believe me, and the truth is that if I am around people, I lose interest in cooking or it is at that moment that I lose the ability to cook. I only know how to cook my own food, not because it tastes bad but because it is during the time when I have no one around to cook for me and I have no choice but to cook what I would eat myself.

After I cook my food, and my friends come around to taste my food, they are always surprised at how good it tastes and some would not believe I actually made the food myself.

Today, I actually made egusi soup, and I will be writing about how I did it. Here is the food on my table...

This is Egusi soup, it is an African soup that is commonly prepared among the Yoruba people. It has a very delicious taste and is also my favorite type of soup. The following are the ingredients I used.

  1. Palmoil
  2. Egusi
  3. tomatoes and pepper
  4. Crayfish and locust beans
  5. pumpkin leaf, also known as ugwu leaf in my country.
  6. Fish

So I went out to get some tomatoes and pepper. I bought a lot so that I can keep some to make stew for another time. Above is the grater I used to grate the tomatoes and peppers. Below is the result.

After grinding my tomatoes, I brought out my fish and I cut it to pieces, then removed the bones in it.

Thereafter, I brought out my locust beans to wash and got my egusi soaked in water. The picture on the left is of locust beans, while the one on the right below is of egusi.

After washing my locus beans, I placed in it the plate where I kept my grated tomatoes and pepper. Then I went on to put the pot of fire, then poured 4 spoons of palm oil into the pot, after that, I sliced in onions to fry with the palm oil, adding a cube of seasoning into it. Then poured my pepper and tomatoes into the pot.

After my tomatoes and onions had fried very well for a bit with the Palm oil, I went on adding my Egusi. It was really nice! Normally, I would have fried my fish with tomatoes and pepper but I had forgotten I bought fish for the soup 😅. It was until later that I figured I had not yet added fish to the pot.

After adding the egusi, I added salt and two cubes of seasoning to the soup. Then I let the Egusi cook on low heat while I steer it to keep it from burning.

When I saw the egusi had cooked well, it was time to fetch my pumpkin (Ugwu) leaves that I had soaked in water. So it is selfie time!

This guy is a very fine husband material, 1000 yards.

PS: This image below is taken from the last time I cooked Egusi, which is the time before now. I forgot to take a picture of my soaked pumpkin leaves so I decided to use these images.

Then I proceeded to add the leaves to the Egusi soup. After adding the leaves, I then stirred the soup. I let the leaves cook very well until they were very soft before my cooking was done.

It was at the end that it dawned on me that I had not added my fish to the soup. I was like FUCK UP... I was glad that I bought smoked fish, which means there would not be a problem if I added it immediately to the soup.

I added the fish that I had pieced, and then I added a little amount of curry into the soup and let it cook for 5 to 10 minutes before I was done.

I prefer eating this type of meal with fufu, but it happened that there is no way I could get fufu nearby so I decided to make Eba (baked garri), which I did not take pictures of. I ate this meal with Eba for about an hour after I cooked it. Here are the pictures I took before starting to eat my meal.

HOW MUCH DID IT COST ME TO MAKE THIS MEAL

Before making this meal, I was not sure what to eat. I was tired of eating rice and I didn't want to cook beans, then I thought cooking Egusi soap would not be a bad idea. I already had Egusi with me, a measurement of 1 cup, which I bought for #400 naira, about $0.54.

The smoked fish that I bought was gotten for #500 naira which is about $0.67 for one. It feels expensive to me; I don't know how much they sell it for in your country. If you think it is expensive, please tell me.

For the palm oil, I bought a bottle of palm oil for #1200 about $1.62. I like palm oil a lot, and I don't think buying it in bottles would pay for itself. Soon I would ask for the price of 5 liters of palm oil which I would plan to buy and start keeping at home.

The tomatoes and pepper that I got were also gotten for #500 naira which is $0.67. I bought this much because I planned to keep some to make stew another day.

The crayfish and locust beans was gotten for 50 naira each, $0.68. I added two crayfish and used one wrap of locust beans which cost a total of $0.2, which is exactly #150 naira.

Lastly, the pumpkin leaves, which I got for the price of #200 naira, which is $0.27, When I got them they were still in branches but the people I bought it from helped me to slice the leaves.

I spent a total of #2950, which is about $4, to make this meal.

In your country, is having to cook something like this for $4 worth it? What do you think?

He tried, husband material, the tomatoes, especially the curry part stunned me though, but I guess it will still taste delicious

I like the scent and taste of curry. I couldn't resist adding it but only put in minimal amounts. It gives it that party egusi taste. 😁

Oh really? I never knew, I guess I'll have to try it out myself, hopefully hubby doesn't pursue me from his house😂

Bro you must be getting marriage proposals now. xD

Great job with the meal.

Hopefully, I get married soon 😅😂

But before that, travel the whole world bro. Because this time won't come back again. Unless you get a partner who is ready to join you on the world tour.

I would keep that noted while I hustle hard! Man needs to have the funds to travel the world.

How's everything bro? What's keeping you busy these days?

Planning for @newbies-hive program is one of the things in my mind. The program would soon begin, so I have it so much in mind.

Also, need to go through the #globalization tag to check out the entries to the contest I am running via the Crossculture community.

I am also doing some background work on the Hive Learners community. Not too much though.

Still learning my programming. I am taking it slow and steady. My focus is on DevOps at the moment. Although I have knowledge of Frontend which was what I learned first before moving into DevOps. When I have learned enough of frontend or maybe after I have gotten a job, I would begin to build my frontend knowledge as a side hobby.

But the dish looks delicious!

Noodles, egg and that is it!

This is really funny! Yeah, I used to be like this. But I decided to learn and do more. I am sure if you want to learn more dishes you would be great at it.

Hehehe. You can't tell me you are a husband material because you cooked common Egusi soup which I didn't taste to make my comment 😏😏

Hehehe. A confession to make; I have never cooked Egusi myself because I don't like the soup but I almost did rubbish when I travelled home last December and grandma insisted I prepare Egusi for her. I was shy to tell her I haven't cooked it before. But with a strong and shaky mind, I went but it turned out to be great because she complimented my cooking skill.

#2950 isn't bad to make something delicious. At least I use #2000+ to make a perfect vegetable soup with varieties 😋😋😋

Well, when can I come and taste yours so we would know if you are husband material or not? 😌

Egusi soup is not hard to cook, it is actually the first soup I learned how to do which was around 2017.

If you taste my Egusi, seriously you would always think about it anytime someone else cook egusi for you. You would forever miss my cooking!

Well, when can I come and taste yours so we would know if you are husband material or not? 😌

Smiles... you don't need to tell me, my baby has already confirmed I am a quality Husband material ☺️😊

Hmm... Alright na. Since your babe has confirmed that, I give up 😂

Starstring with the sauce hehe. Am on my way to Nigeria to take the left over if there’s some remaining but if there’s none you should be prepared to cook for me again hehe😂

In my country it is a lot to people who don’t use dollar. But with the way my eye enter dollar I might not see the 4 dollar as much but I still think it’s worth it though.

There is no problem cooking for you again. Just pay me the money for the ingredients and I would cook for you. You don't even need to pay me to cook for you.

We don't use dollar here. I mentioned the price in dollar because I know a lot of people would easily relate to it.

Husband material indeed 😹. I’ll say 1 million yards.

It surprised me how you cook your egusi.. the Yoruba people cook their egusi is quite different. You cook almost like the igbos, I feel like egusi is more of Igbo soup tho. It is similar to the way I prepare my egusi too. Are you from ekiti or ondo?

It is really nice though, it looks delicious. hehe, lemme comma stay with you🥺

The smile on your face is like.. let me quickly snap this picture, so I can eat my food 😹

Husband material indeed 😹. I’ll say 1 million yards.

Thanks dear.

It is similar to the way I prepare my egusi too. Are you from ekiti or condo?

I am from Ogun State oh.. Abeokuta to be precise...

The smile on your face is like.. let me quickly snap this picture, so I can eat my food 😹

You get the point exactly! that is what was in my mind.

Getting friends to taste the things someone cooks, is the best thing we can do. Not because they are our friends but because they most likely say the truth and don't just say it's good but taste the opposite. You did a great job with your soup :)

Thank you very much! Do you also cook and tell your friends to check it out?

Husband material oh! @starstrings, you won't kill me oh! If all the men that can cook are husband material, then we will not have any problem. Hahaha 😄.
Please, this is my favorite. I hope you still have some of the soup. Ohh! I forgot. I only love it with akpu. Can you make that too?
Thanks for sharing bro.

Proud of you @starstrings01, I'm not surprised at the outcome of this delicacy. One thing i like about you is the fact that you're always curious to learn one thing or the other and you learn so fast. This is a plus to you and keep it up my dear brother.

Husband material 3 million yards🥴 just de play. Wetin no even sweet. Sha well done ooo

You did not taste something, you are already concluding 😂😂😂.

Leave my conclusion ooo😅😅😅. Hmm... It does look good sha

The soup looks good and I'm certain it tastes great as well .. At least no lady can use you to catch unnecessary cruise .

Yes oh! no lady fit use me catch cruise.. I sabi cook and no be small...
