I know how it feels when you're new to the chain and everyone is clamouring for engagement but you don't feel like you've gotten the hang of it or know how to go about it. If you are a newbie reading this, don't panic; even those who have been on Hive for a long time (like me) are concerned about how we haven't been engaging as much.

I may not have made the most comments in the chain, but I believe I have a way to assist you make more quality engagements rather than focusing on the number of authors, posts, and comments you reply to. Quality, as they say, always triumphs over quantity.

To have a high level of engagement, you should make a plan for days when you will write your posts and days when you will interact with the community that will fit in with your personal life. I would not give you a certain day or time, but I would share an idea with you so that you could figure out what works best for you.

You'll probably write 3 to 5 posts per week, with the days in between free for you to get close to whichever community you wish to connect with. If you (want to) post every day, you should have a healthy mix between Hive and other aspects of your life. This manner, you can maintain a consistent level of engagement.

Part 2 of this article will focus on certain tools or features available in Hive Dapps that may be utilised to increase engagement. It is better if I explain how to make great comments (engagements) on posts. As we all know, Hive is not like Facebook, Twitter, or other social media platforms.

QUALITY ENGAGEMENT

I wrote an article regarding Quality Engagement once, but it didn't go into detail because it wasn't a stand-alone topic. It also discussed other subjects like as quality content and how to obtain visibility on Hive. You should absolutely check it out, especially if you're new to Hive and attempting to figure out some basics.

This is the form of engagement that entails sharing your thoughts or connecting with the author's ideas. It does not involve commenting for the sake of engaging, i.e. they appear spammy. This is where you will see remarks from another author with no input, personal opinion, questions, or anything else.

Let me share some
Examples of poor forms of Engagement...

To create these samples, I requested that my friend @olujay send me several types of low-quality engagement type comments on my article. The categories are as follows:

1. A Comment to fulfil all righteousness of Engagement

example 1.png

The first thing to notice in this first example is that the author responding most likely did not read the content of the post and must have simply selected the words: Student Dilemma, Work and Study from the post's title and then used that to build this response.

This comment in no way represents his personal point of view or experiences. If I encounter this comment, I will most likely ignore it or advise the author to improve his engagement abilities, as I have done many times before.

Below is another example of this category:

example 2.png

2. Unclear form of Engagements

unclear.png

Here's another example of the poor or low-quality type of engagements that most authors make. I still classify this as the first type of engagement indicated above, and as stated in the first example, this type of engagement does not demonstrate or establish that the author commenting absorbed the contents of the post.

Also, it doesn't tell us anything about what he agrees or disagrees with, nor does it add anything to the author's thesis. The comment is not interesting enough to entice anyone to look up the author commenting's profile.

3. Vote begging Comments

example 3.png

It's fine if you've published a post that's connected to someone else's and want the author to check it out, but it's not okay to beg the author for a vote. Vote begging is generally frowned upon on Hive, and users are allowed to make whatever decisions they wish.

Also, it would have been great if the author above had provided his point of view and views before urging that his post be read.

4. Spammy Comments

example 4.png

This is the most common type of comment. You'd see remarks like "excellent," "good one," and so on. This is the worst kind of engagement an author can have on a post...

Please do not attempt this; instead, be more interactive and offer your personal experience and point of view.

Example of Quality form of Engagement

It doesn't have to be long to make a decent comment; it just needs to convey your insight, thoughts, summary, or point of view on the author's piece. You can ask questions or express your dissatisfaction with what the author has said. That way, you're making great engagement (comments) that don't have to be long.

Below is an example of a quality comment by @olujay on one of my posts:

  • A long and detailed Comment

example 5.png

First, he might have made a poor comment by selecting either full-time or remote employment without explaining why he chose either, but instead, he went into detail about how he saw both alternatives and made his final decision.

  • A short and engaging comment

IMG_20220930_082735.jpg

This comment was made by the same author @olujay but this time short and engaging. This means that your comments do not have to be long before it is engaging.

Let it just share your point of view, with that, you are good to go.

As opposed to a comment like this:

example 6.png

This type of remark is frequently made by many people... This level of interaction does not prompt a conversation with the author of the post. You'd like to receive a thank you, and that's where the conversation ends.

Comments in form of Questions are Great...

You are unlikely to want to engage with an author if you do not comprehend their key message. You are always welcome to ask a question. In this way, you are indicating to the author that you are interested in the article. You will almost certainly receive a response or an explanation of the actual point of the message.

Please, try to make your question as clear as possible.

This post appears to be quite lengthy. As a result, it has been divided into two halves. The second series will be published as soon as I finish writing it..

Making quality engagements might be a potential problem for me as I'm a person of few words. I prefer to listen than talk. Nevertheless, I guess I will learn to enjoy it rather than see it as a 'job' ๐Ÿ˜‚

I look forward to reading the part 2.

Making quality engagements might be a potential problem for me as I'm a person of few words. I prefer to listen than talk. Nevertheless, I guess I will learn to enjoy it rather than see it as a 'job' ๐Ÿ˜‚

You don't even need to make long comments to make quality engagement, you only just need to share your thoughts on the article. Then from there, you would get better at expressing your comment through text. And you know the secret already... Learning to enjoy it than seeing it as a job.

Thanks @starstrings01 for the effort you have taken to list out the different types of bad engagements, even mentioning up to four.

Who knew bad comments could be differentiated into many parts. I'm sure I fall into almost all the categories if not worse. I find it hard to write comments on a write up or video I enjoyed, the best I usually do is to like it.

Your post just showed me that I cannot survive on Hive if I don't know how to write comments that are engaging. I would be looking forward to the remaining part of the post.

ย 2 years agoย (edited)ย

I was just laughing reading those comments' examples and I wonder if some users really do understand what real engagement means.

Such comments are also frowned at on my posts because I believe they do not read to grasp the information. Why would a user write "thank you very much" when I made a post appreciating someone of her resilient spirit? I ignored it!

One thing about me is that I read and reread a post to understand so I don't give nonsense comment and sometimes, I just ignore if I don't have anything to contribute to it.

Proper and quality engagement is the key here and you shouldn't comment just for the sake of it.

ย 2 years agoย ย

Why would a user write "thank you very much" when I made a post appreciating someone of her resilient spirit? I ignored it!\

This is funny.. swears!

One thing about me is that I read and reread a post to understand so I don't give nonsense comment and sometimes, I just ignore if I don't have anything to contribute to it

We are the same on this. Most times, I just look for a single thing I understand or can best relate within the whole context and then share my thoughts on it. If my comment is not engaging, then I am off.

ย 2 years agoย ย

I saw the way you used @olujay to run this social experiment hahaha. It turns out that everyone can actually make shitty comment, but then, sometimes,we choose to see the value of a post from what we can learn from. In the past, I've read techy posts even if they were boring. I did it because I wanted to learn and sometimes we need to enjoy the effort. Engagement is not stressful, people just see it as a job. It shouldn't be. We can learn to enjoy it. Imagine the network one can build with actual and exciting engagement here.

@tipu curate

ย 2 years agoย ย

Thatโ€™s the problem. When they see it as a job than something to enjoy. They tend to do it to fulfill all righteousness of engaging.

The connections and relationships alone is an added benefit.

Thanks for the support always mentor โค๏ธโ€ฆ

QUALITY COMMENT ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Most times we force engagement and that's where issues always dey. If people learn to be free with it, I think it'll help.

ย 2 years agoย ย

I saw the way you used @olujay to run this social experiment...

Naso we see am o๐Ÿ˜‚

Seeing anything as a job and not exciting will eventually wear one down. Just have fun while you are at it.

ย 2 years agoย ย

The benefits of quality engagement cannot be overemphasized here. Just Like you said, a comment must not be long before it could be regarded as descent as far as it picked the main point of view from the author.

I have learned to skip a post rather than dropping an off point comment, it can be annoying because I have experienced that too on my post.

Going through some of the screenshots here, I can't help but laugh out my worries ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Thanks for sharing valuable content as always,โค๏ธ. I have learnt from you today to plan my days, engagement days and posting days so to accommodate other areas of my personal life comfortably.

Thanks boss, I will be expecting part 2 ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿค—โ™ฅ๏ธ

LOL. I can relate.
I make this kinds of low quality comments too. ๐Ÿ˜
But never I begged for an upvote or reblog in the comments. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Making a quality comment sometimes is like making a mini-post where it would drain my brain. I am currently having difficulty expressing my opinions or ideas. And I can only make a few quality comments in a day.
Maybe in the future where I can easily express my opinions, I can also make more quality engagements.

Btw, I think @olujay is a solid fan of yours. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Btw, I think @olujay is a solid fan of yours. ๐Ÿ˜Š

You can say that again.

Lol... I am sure you must have felt a little guilty conscience in there. I am glad you got to know.. And it great you don't beg for upvote or reblog in comments...

Making a quality comment sometimes is like making a mini-post where it would drain my brain. I am currently having difficulty expressing my opinions or ideas.

Yeah, this is true and this is not true though... As I said earlier, comments does not have to be long... and if you are definitely going to write a comment that is long, that miss you enjoyed the content of the post (just liket this comment you made on my blog ๐Ÿ˜œ) ...

For me, most of the comments I make are usually short and engaging... I don't usually write long comments unless it is needed, it or depends on my mood and my present location.

Smiles.. @olujay is a brother of mine.. I brought him to Hive...

ย 2 years agoย ย

I was actually thinking of a very short comment like;

"Great post!",

but I changed my mind and instead expressed my thoughts. LOL. ๐Ÿ˜

Again, thanks for making this article. ๐Ÿ˜Š

ย 2 years agoย ย

"Great post!",

You are funny person...

I was still expecting some kinda comment on this post though, then it would have been very funny... I was telling @olujay before I published this post that there would still be someone who would type "Great Post" under this blog...

There wasn't though..

Again, thanks for making this article. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Do you know what I appreciate the most, the fact that you consumed it and loved it? There is nothing that feels better asides from the rewards on it though.

Me too. That's why I am always eager to read and respond to comments especially those that expresses their ideas or opinions on the topic. ๐Ÿ˜Š

ย 2 years agoย (edited)ย

There are some comments that you will read on your post and just wonder if the person really went through your post at all... expecially when you have to make a report on the post promotion features on discord. They just glanced through and write supported...๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„
I sometimes prefer to just read and not comment on some post expecially if I can't relate or agree with the writing.
I appreciate all your efforts and always dropping quality content looking forward to reading part 2. Well-done bro

ย 2 years agoย ย

They just glanced through and write supported...

A lot of people do this because supporting another author is required, so they see it as a job and just go about spam commenting. They are not interested in the author's content but instead commenting to fulfill all righteousness.

ย 2 years agoย (edited)ย

Ah, very good written article. I will like To add that length doesn't equal quality. You said it and I'm saying it again, Many think they have to comment 100+ words to impress the author - I personally feel a contribution to the subject no matter how short is quality.

I like the way you featured stuffs like vote begging and spammy comments. Some people don't even know when they spam these comments. Good work @starstrings01!

ย 2 years agoย ย

Man, I have no choice than to comment under your comment chief ๐Ÿคฒ.
The fact that you said the length of the words doesn't equal quality engagement is so true.

The point is that many people have to enjoy engagement and see it a fun aspect which has to be real. I think many people have issues understanding that word "engagement" in particular.

If you were given a task to follow up a contract in a company, and you were also instructed that you must secure the contract, how will you engage with the likely authorities in charge of awarding the contract?

This is where genuine quality engagement comes in.
The author (he/she) must understand the content of the post before he or she engages.
One thing I learnt from my brother @ksam is that don't force engagement, just say it as it is layed down in your mind after you've gone through the post so that the author can sense the genuine engagement of yours.

Many people don't read posts from beginning to the end and they just try to be smart to make comments based on the topic ๐Ÿ˜…

Well, this is why my brother @starstrings01 is an impact maker!
I hope the newbies will get to read this post in full and also dive into the comments session to go through some additions from engagers!

ย 2 years agoย ย

@ksam is a boss on its own. I am glad you, @ksam and many others that I have onboarded are doing pretty well. I can beat my chest anywhere for you guys!

True many people donโ€™t read post from beginning to the the end and truth is they donโ€™t have to. They just have to pick what they understand on the whole content and share what their point of view.

Thatโ€™s all that is needed to make a quality engagement.

ย 2 years agoย ย

@ksam is a boss on its own. I am glad you, @ksam and many others that I have onboarded are doing pretty well. I can beat my chest anywhere for you guys!

ย 2 years agoย (edited)ย

Yeah length doesnโ€™t mean quality. I had to make sure to mention that in my post. So far the post showed your point of view it is okay. It does not have to be so long.

The goal is to interact, connect and communicate.

thanks a lot for the tips.

unfortunately, maybe I will find it difficult to write detailed comments. Whenever I want to comment, my mind has probably already decided what to say. but when I started typing, I became hesitant and finally canceled my intention to reply.

is there a way to solve this?

ย 2 years agoย ย

Do you mean you feel this way when you want to comment on another authorโ€™s post or when you want to reply to a comment on your post?

both, but I feel it more often when I want to comment on other author's posts.

ย 2 years agoย ย

Just know your comments do not have to be long and has to have exactly what you think about the post. To do this you have to understand the thesis of the post if not, you would lose what you have in mind to comment.

I prefer not commenting at all on posts I do not understand. I let it be.

Thanks for sharing this post with all of us, new or old, we always need to remember the Hive rules. You went straight to the point, but everything was clearly understood. The examples you posted showed very well how a comment should be made. Many times we get more points in a comment than even in a publication, that is also important to know. But you have to concentrate on making a good publication and a good comment. Thanks @starstrings01

ย 2 years agoย ย

Many times we get more points in a comment than even in a publication, that is also important to know. But you have to concentrate on making a good publication and a good comment.

Yeah we need to put focus both in making good publication and comment. I recently wrote on making quality publication a week ago, that was my last two articles.. You can check it out.

Hum, that's in one of your no spam rules hahahahahaah. I'm kidding, I'm sure I'll read your posts because they're interesting and you always have to review the rules. Thanks friend @starstrings01

ย 2 years agoย ย

Thank you very much! I try my best not to rush my articles and put my heart into them when I make them...

ย 2 years agoย ย

Actually at first I started commenting like other platforms. Then I came to know it's not appropriate in hive.People wants real interaction. Not fake one.Though long and thoughtful comments take huge time. But in term of quality we can't compromise.
Thanks for giving us the advice. As a newbie it's a gem to me.

A short comment is often better than a long comment. Especially if it is funny. For example see YouTube. The comments there sometimes funnier than the videos.

ย 2 years agoย ย

Yeah on Hive people love interaction. But your comment does not have to be long just pour your thoughts and heart in it then you are good to go!

ย 2 years agoย ย

Thank you for making this post and enlightening everyone on how to make a quality reply to a post. I got to learn if you want to reply a post you should read the content in it,and the writer should feel it that you really do by the reply you give and which means your reply must correspond to the content.

ย 2 years agoย ย

yeah, definitely the reply has to correspond with the content of the post. Post importantly, it should have your point of view to what the writer said. This makes a good form of engagement.

Thank you. Your post definitely encourages engagement. Sometimes there are not enough hours in a day to all that we wish to do and accomplish - but you certainly inspired me to do better.

ย 2 years agoย ย

Exactly! There arenโ€™t enough hours in a day thatโ€™s why specifying some days in a week to only engage would help out.

Also more reason why l donโ€™t publish everyday. I try to balance my posting with engagement.

That is a good idea @starstrings01 - do you have more than one account?

ย 2 years agoย ย

Yeah I do.. but I use only this account to publish

Ah ok - thanks for the info

What a great work. This is a helpful guide to a beginner like me. I may have created my account last June 2022 but I became active on the middle of August. There are lot of things that I have to learn about hive as I alwaya consider myself as a beginner who is always hungry for learning. Thank you so much for sharing this my dear friend, @starstrings01

That means this post found you well. I am sure your comments would be superb from now on! Need any help or question. I am just a comment away!

For me engagement comes naturally because I always love reading most contents that I come across but sometimes I do feel reluctant to make a comment because at the end of my comment, I find out that it is too lengthy.

I don't mind having a lengthy comment but it annoys me when it's long and it doesn't relate to what I have written so I always try my best not to do such to others.

It's a good thing you are giving us tips on how to get better at quality engagement, thank you sir ๐Ÿ™.

I think itโ€™s good to specify days for engaging in the hive blockchain. For me I prefer engaging whenever I get the chance.

I engage in about 3 to 4 communities so what I do is to make sure I pass through each community and comment on about 4 to 5 posts each time I pick my phone and enter into hive. I know itโ€™s not much now but itโ€™s better than nothing. Am still trying to figure out hive so I think the 5 is even overwhelming for me.

But fingers crossed ๐Ÿคž, I hope I can do about 20 posts in each community in he near future.

I remember the days before the recent hard fork. Back then more rewards cam from posting but after the HF rewards were split 50/50 for posting and curating. This incentivized curating and commenting much more. It was a struggle for me as I was more of a blogger than a curator, but nowadays I have slowly shifted to commenting and curating more and posting a bit less.

Since I post less nowadays, I have also begun to delegate my HP so that I can earn passive returns and income even if I'm not posting or curating daily (due to absence of wifi for example). In this way I'm spreading out my time and effort and HP in a multi-pronged approach.

ย 2 years agoย ย

I actually was into low engagement comment but now I've stopped some people just do that if they don't have the time to read through your post. An author is expected to have same view as the writer but it doesn't mean you have to also make lengthy comments though. Thanks for sharing this content.

Right on spot!!, you have said the most part, I believe people have issues with commenting possibly because they want to engage for engagement's sake, I mean they are just there for the appearance not for the actual content.

Thanks a lot for this guideline, well, I personally hope to improve in my best part when engaging with others as well, which is why it is good to have fewer quality engagements rather than bombarding everyone with cliche feedback for appearnaces.

The first thing that I loved that you talked about in this post is "clamouring for engagement", this basically for me is what i see as the shadow/problem that keeps us on it other side, it takes our sight off the knowledge that could be gained from posts, especially newbies like me on the chain (I think it'd be less selfish of me If I put it this way). We think it is best to fulfill that righteousness of engaging to stay trendy in the comment sections of different authors with the hope of getting known or gaining visibility, same goes for original posts as well, dropping quantities consecutively like we're going to build a tall storey with them.

I feel like if we can get that clamour off our heads, we will get to know the beauty of engagement. Thank you for sharing this awesome content.

ย 2 years agoย ย

I feel because there is a lot of clamour on engagement, people just want to do it for the sake of doing it and not for the beauty in it. So I agree that we should take the clamour off our heads, and start engaging genuinely... This is an awesome comment man... You are doing well!

Thank you my brother

ย 2 years agoย ย

I could not stop laughing while going through the Olujay's comments. My apologies to that. It did looked like an experiment he is performing. But either way, he will work his way out that I believe.

I remember my early days, it has been a disaster. But glad that I was able to explore and make some good friends very easily. To this day, I have been in connect with them.

While during the last few days, it has been amazing. I was busy with life but ever since I have been giving my time in HIVE & going through users posts and reading their thoughts and be a part of their post, I am truly mesmerized. We have come a long way. So much has improved and seems like we are walking towards the right path. While some people does gets lost in this triumph but I suppose HIVE has users like you to show them the right way.

As engagement is really not a task to perform, rather a journey to enjoy and learn about others!

Really admirable post. I hope all sorts of users take the benefit from it.

But either way, he will work his way out that I believe.

yeah, @olujay is someone I brought to Hive, so we thought of having the social experiment together. He writes very nice and engaging comments every time.. I definitely would send him some rewards on this post after the payout because this post would have not been complete without his contribution to my idea.

I remember my early days, it has been a disaster. But glad that I was able to explore and make some good friends very easily. To this day, I have been in connect with them

My early days was a disaster... I didn't understand anything, if not for the people I got to meet after, and the fact I decided to be inquisitive and ask questions, things would have not gotten better for me. Now, I try my best to teach them to others to make it easy for them and not to pass the hard route we passed when starting on Hive.

While some people does gets lost in this triumph but I suppose HIVE has users like you to show them the right way.

Yeah... This is where my path of Hive is dedicated to...

As engagement is really not a task to perform, rather a journey to enjoy and learn about others!

There is no other definition of engagement that is better than what you said here. If we take engagement seriously, not with pressure to do so, but with our time, then it would a lot of enjoyment and learning about others as you have said.

I read this at the right time. I'm new here on hive and this post made me understood what quality engagement is. The planning would really come in handy, that way it would be easier to engage properly and not for the sake of it.

yeah... it is always harder to have a quality form of engagement if you don't plan it well. Come to think of it, you have comments on your blog to reply to, you have comments to make on other people's blogs, you have your content to create and also have your personal life activities to balance.

So without well-structured planning, it would be difficult to put everything in order...

Everything stated here is a huge stepping stone if we apply them, but one thing stood out for me which is how you defined quality engagement. It entails sharing your thoughts or connecting with the author's ideas, not just commenting for the sake of engaging.

It's my new guide to any comment I want to make now, I'll always ask myself, "is this comment connecting with the author's idea?"

Personally, I believe engaging with posts this way on other social media platforms too will bring great results like being noticed and networking with people of like minds and even more followers.

I'm gradually learning to really engage and not just use fire emoji like I'm trying to burn their account, e.g "๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ... Great post"

Thanks so much for this @starstrings01

Lol.. I see what you did there. You find this stuff very common in other social media. Instead of sharing their ideas or thoughts on an article or content, they drop in emojis that don't add anything to what was said. This is what makes Hive unique and also what that would contribute to your growth on the chain.

This is one of the reasons why I haven't had the chance to engage well with others on the platform. To be honest, though, I have been occupied with other work and I am currently finding it hard to manage my time.

My brain is usually always calculating how it would be in three paces at a time and it has not been helpful at all.

Instead of coming here to fulfill all righteousness in the name of engaging without properly doing the right thing, then I would only be wasting my time ruining my reputation and it is the last thing I want right now.

Hive is a place to have meaningful connections with people, and for that true connection to be established, quality engagement is required.

I'ld rather not engage when I know that I can read enything

is there any community which is accepting #diarygame

What is worth doing at all is worth doing well really . I feel if you actually and honestly digest an article on here you will sure have one or two comments to share which will of course produce meaningful engagements. It is no rocket science at all .

Yeah brother.. no magic to it, just digest the content and definitely one would have a thing or two to say.

Saludos.

I'm just joining Hive, and I decided to learn new things which pushed me to this your post. No doubt, this actually reshaped my motive on this platform. You pointed out my weaknesses, smiles. I find it difficult to read lengthy articles, but I read yours. This article made it known to me that reading lengthy articles and understanding it is only the way to go far on this platform, I'm no more a kid, I will fully commit myself into it, just needs some motivation, and I'm sure @moremoney28 will do that.

Thank you for this article.

Truly one learns daily. I was of the opinion that quality engagement had to do with lengthy comments. Sometimes I do feel bad for not having a long text to write so I just skip the post.

I feel bad about being part of the people that write spammy comments. It's worse that I thought I was doing such a great job by making 10 irrelevant comments daily but now I know much better.

Thank you for the insight! It is very much appreciated.

Being a newbie on hive is overwhelming, you feel as though you should post every day and this makes us newbies focus on writing instead of engagement. But this post has made me realise that I haven't been providing quality engagements as I ought to. I thought you need to write a lengthy comment to make quality comment but now I know better. I will try and implement your idea of having alternate days to post and make comments and I will try to start making meaningful comment. Thank you @starstrings01

Thank you so much for this post. It has given me a headstart as a newbie on how to engage meaningfully with other users on this platform. Just a quick question please, how and where do I write my "introduce yourself" post. And how do I use all the markdown techniques you applied on this post?

Hoping for a response soon, thanks!
